Intermittent 500 error message - front-end only
I’m getting a weird 500 error message scenario. Until tonight, it has been fairly intermittent – wait a few minutes, refresh and the problem is fixed. But tonight it seems to be permanent.
There is no problem getting into the Textpattern admin interface; this only affects the front end.
Here’s what I’ve attempted so far:
- refreshed the browser cache (not much hope there, as the problem is the same across multiple browsers),
- removed everything from my default page template except a basic HTML test message,
- copied over a new htaccess file.
None of these has worked.
Does anyone have any other ideas on what I can do to trouble shoot this some more.
Otherwise, I’m tending towards saying this is a hosting problem. I can access the server logs but I don’t really know enough about how to interpret them apart from seeing the error in there.
Thanks.

Hi Anura.
What’s the error message in server logs saying?

Re: Intermittent 500 error message - front-end only
Here’s an example:
89.217.193.118 – - [12/Oct/2011:08:27:30 +1100] “GET / HTTP/1.1” 500 1545 “-” “Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:6.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0”
I assume this is one of the errors, mainly because its got the error code in there.

Does that message come from the access log or from the error log?

Now I look, that’s an access log. I’m not sure I know how to find the error logs – the hosting company uses Parallels Panel 10.
Off to bed, but I’ll be playing around some more in the morning.

Hi
Have you set the log information in textpattern admin pref? is so disable it maybe that can solve the problem (i had some message like database has gone away before that).

And we here we go. With no intervention from me (the suggestion from Dragondz came during my night-time), the front-end version of the site is now back up.
I have no idea what is going on, but I’m seriously thinking about changing the hosting company to see if that’s the problem.
