Consolidate preferences/languages into a single page
This is proposal #1 for the TXP5 admin-side structure project
The TXP4 preferences and languages are split across 3 different pages, and there can be some confusion about what constitutes an advanced or basic preference. So why not create a single page to house all preferences and language selector?
Any feedback for and against (or suggestions for a different method) welcome.

That’s pretty incredible, Phil. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Agree with the preferences comments.

Re: Consolidate preferences/languages into a single page
Having worked on redesigning these pages a bit now, the most logical solution I can come up with is one preferences page (which also contains any additional plugin prefs), and one languages page. It makes sense to keep languages and preferences separate to me.
Unless I hear arguments otherwise, I’ll leave it as that for the moment.

That’d get my vote.

Re: Consolidate preferences/languages into a single page
I’d differentiate between switching installed languages and installing languages.
Cent 1: Semantics
Choosing one of the installed languages is clearly a pref whereas installing languages is a kind of one-time maintenance step.
Cent 2: Workflow
As a non-english user I find myself switching languages quite often as long as the site is in development stage. It’s easier for me to have an English backend because the information and the backend terms I find in the forum and elsewhere is much more often in English.
For sneak previews for the clients I switch to German, afterwards I’ve to change to English again, and finally the translation phase of English plugin remainders begins where heavy switching back and forth takes place. Might be my personal workflow alone, but for non-english users it’s surely more common practice to switch languages, whereas native English countries don’t have to think of these steps.
Edit: Sorry if you got my post mailed twice, I’ve not re-posted, I just edited. Strange! Not if I quote myself :))

Seems reasonable uli – so for the moment I’ve moved the installed language selector to the prefs page admin prefs section.

Yay!! Simply reading that sentence feels good :)

@uli
Whether the devs agree to keep it there is not my decision though, all I can do is make the suggestion in the mockups and see what happens.

And add a sentence indicating:
“WARNING: changing the language of the backend will affect the uri from the site”
Unless this is different in Txp5.

Re: Consolidate preferences/languages into a single page
You mean the literal occurrence of the term “category/catégorie/kategorie” etc in the URL, right?

@sacripant
Sorry, can you explain that a little more?
