UK-based hosting recommendations?
… or at least one with UK-based support and billing.
Should support:
- the usual txp LAMP requirements
- GD libs
- htaccess
- direct ftp accounts for subdirectories (e.g. not web-based uploader)
- good reliable webmail (i.e. intuitive for non-experts, not too barebones)
SSH access is not essential.
Any suggestions?

You might want to have a look at Webfaction too. They meet your listed requirement and do provide SSH. Their support is very good indeed and everyone I have dealt with there has been prompt, polite and most helpful. Wet had a similar view in 2008.
Their webmail client is Roundcube which is pretty good too. One has to spend a little time getting used to the Webfaction control panel and to their system of mailboxes and email addresses but it is all ultimately better and more flexible and powerful than C-Panel, for instance.
Formerly, one had to go through a few hoops with a Textpattern installation there because they didn’t provide PHP mail but they do now and so it’s all straightforward and standard.
