Transferring Database to new server
Hi there
We’ve been moving our site, Epic India Magazine, from our old server to our a new one (Hostmonster – and let me give these guys a big shout out here as I’ve never had such great technical support anywhere before. I’ve never done this type of thing and they’ve been wonderful guiding me through the process step by step and doing the set up for me as we go) Now here’s the problem I’ve run into. I’ve managed to transfer my.sql file over to the new database but we’re having trouble getting it to work. So far the best we’ve been able to come up with is the site’s logo and background show up but nothing else and I receive a 404 error – the required resource was not found.
To me that sounds like the message is from Textpattern as the page contains the links to Textpatters, the magazine’s logo and background, but none of the actual content. Here’s a link to the temporary url that Hostmonster has set up for testing the site http://74.220.215.205/~epicindi/epicindia.com/magazine/ – and you can compare that to what the site should look like at its regular address http://epicindia.com/magazine.
If the answer lies with something to do with the texpattern’s .sql files that hostmonster needs to know about could somebody offer a suggestion as to what could be wrong and why we still can’t access our databases
Thank you very much
Richard Marcus

Re: Transferring Database to new server
Did you modify the paths in the advanced preferences and in config.php?
If that doesn’t help, switch the site from live to debug mode (also in the preferences).

Re: Transferring Database to new server
I’ve not attempted either of those procedures, but I’ve heard back from Hostmonster support and they said that it could be an issue with the script configuration as it’s looking for the content but can’t find it. How do I modify the paths in preferences and config.php. As of now the site is live at my old server so doing anything there won’t help – the problem lies with the script and the new server and I can’t access the preferences there yet unless it’s one of the files I can open.
Please understand I’m not a tech person so I wouldn’t even know what to do when you talk about modifying paths and stuff like that – what should I be looking for and what do I change and from what to what? Sorry – we lost our tech person as he now considers this type of job not worthy of his attention or else I wouldn’t be trying to figure this stuff out.
Anything anybody can help me with I’ll be ever so grateful.

Re: Transferring Database to new server
Looking at the admin login page, it’s an ancient TXP version that really (!) should be updated to 4.4.1 (for security reasons). Can you log in there or does that fail as well?

If you can’t log in and you get some kind of error about the database, check if the config.php file in the /textpattern directory contains the correct database name, database prefix, username and password.

Re: Transferring Database to new server
The log in works fine – I was able to access the texpattern pages no problem. The problem lies with the databases and the content of the magazine. The people at hostmonster set up the config.php file so that it would work – but I’ll have them double check those areas again to make sure. They already had to fix it once, so maybe that’s still where the problem lies. Thank you very much Ruud. And yes, once I solve this problem and we’re settled into the new server, I will definitely consider upgrading – although I’ll want to make sure I’m a little more comfortable with tech stuff and have some time to do it properly. Interestingly enough, although I sign in to textpattern and can see all my hosting pages – where the author paste their articles etc, when I navigate to the site itself it switches back to the old server from the new hostmonster server. Strange.

It sounds like your “Site URL” in the “Admin > Preferences” pane is still pointing to the www address of the old host. Change that to your new temporary URL and “View site” will take you to the correct host (remember to change it again later when your new URL becomes permanent).

Re: Transferring Database to new server
Thanks Jakob,
My only question is how will that effect the existing content on the old server if I change the address to that of the new temporary url?
