Email subscriptions for blog posts...

All,

What is the mode du jour for collecting email subscribers who want to receive blog posts by email? (And then sending them said blog posts.)

I see a bab_eop but that looks dead in the water.

Ed. LOL! Okay, from that link above, a path to something is

  1. Postmaster, which refers to…
  2. Postmaster 0.4, which was forked to…
  3. Postmaster revamp

And lastly it looks like MrDale took something over?

I’m a little lost.

Here’s how I remember it without refreshing my memory by going through the threads.

Ben’s original plugin is now Postmaster revamp and is developed by Manfre after Dale’s request.

Dale commissioned him again for new features and the new plugin was then ransomed but – to my knowledge – did not collect the required sum.

Thanks Yiannis! I’ll have a look at revamp, then.

It’s not a plugin, but Feedburner offer it as a free service: http://www.google.com/support/feedburner/bin/answer.py?answer=78982

Re: Email subscriptions for blog posts...

I would also recommend Feedburner or other (possibly paid) service.

Keep in mind that the plugins mentioned, will use PHP’s mail() function to send emails. This can prove nonfunctional when sending large volumes of emails as mail doesn’t do bulk emails, but individual connections to SMTP (closes the socket between calls). The plugins use mail() because it’s “always” available and doesn’t need any additional server configuration.

I would recommend (at least in some cases) doing some server configuration to allow bulk mailing, for example by using PEAR’s mail package and also making sure that mail is sent through server that allows mass mailing and doesn’t block the messages from going thru. It might be that your shared hosting provider doesn’t like large volumes of mail.

But, the plugins and mail() can work just fine especially if the volumes are small, even that it causes some overheat.

Re: Email subscriptions for blog posts...

I too recommend using Feedburner (Google !) for this task. It’s straightforward to implement and thereafter painless. Set up a RSS feed from your site that carries the blog posts in question by a method of your choosing. Link it to Feedburner which has any number of advantages but also an email option. The one possible drawback is that your clients must subscribe to the email option themselves but Feedburner makes that straightforward enough. See an example sign up page here.

Re: Email subscriptions for blog posts...

Thanks, all! The FeedBurner solution looks awesome.

Doesn’t look like there’s a way to import existing subscribers, but maybe there’s not that many, I’ll have to look in the DB and cross my fingers.

Ed. Oh sweetness. Just discovered their WP install was using a FeedBurner account (just managed via a WP plugin), so subscribers are already there. Youpi !

WTF? A plug-in to manage FeedBurner? For bloggers who already own everything?

And yes, I also recommend FeedBurner, just didn’t write the answer because I thought you were explicitly looking for a TXP-only solution.

Let’s hope that Google will not destroy FeedBurner usability in the future by trying to adopt (all?) features under their new and fancy UI guideline (fingers crossed).

I know. They had one for Google Analytics too, which I found equally silly because the analytics were not being used nearly to their full capability in the WP admin. This makes me somewhat tired of the argument of “so many community plugins for WP”…because I’m sure there’s a glut of them that are just pointless. Unfortunately, the sheep don’t undertand that.

No. In fact, I’m a big fan of using external tools whenever possible in context of Txp. Especially if said tools are already immensely popular. This is one reason I love smd_xml so much. A slightly different concept, but still a bridge with the outside.
