Re: Where does all that spam come from?

and those API scripts on both sites might be worth investigating if we can find a forum administrator who has the necessary rights to implement them.

the problem with the spam prevention on punBB is that it checks for exact matches of username+IP+email. This makes those lists irrelevant as IPs and usernames vary. There is a plugin for the latest Punbb which is using stopforumspam. I used it for the neme forum but – although spam was reduced, the change was very little. That’s why I moved on to this with very visible and satisfactory results. I was hoping that somebody could adapt it for this forum.

botscout.com is limited to 300 queries per day (may not be enough).
stopforumspam.com is limited to 20000 queries per day.

If we do go this way stopforumspam has a much larger db but when the site is down, there should be an escape route for new registrations.

Here’s a good writeup by the folks at FluxBB about what measures to fight spam are available.

Guilty! I deleted (no ban) the post and the user.

Ruud, you were absolutely right. (Self-quotation: Thanks for removing!)

I’d be happy if you admins could make some more spam security happen. Big thanks also to you for your time and efforts working on this one!

And thank you, Uli, for being one of the forum’s most active spam reporters! ;)

Re: Where does all that spam come from?

It’s getting to the point where the spammer usernames are pretty obvious, and there’s at least three of them logged on at any given time I am. WTF?!

It’s gone from damn annoying to f-ing hilarious.

Re: Where does all that spam come from?

It is too much!

Whenever I visit, I check, and delete any online spammer I see in the front page “online” list.

Interestingly enough most of their language of choice is Deutsch.

Re: Where does all that spam come from?

The last 10 I removed were all listed on stopforumspam. Once the forum has moved servers, I’ll see if I can implement a “stopforumspam” check when people register. In the past some other service was used, but that no longer exists.

I wouldn’t go that way. I used to have a plugin in my forum where the registrations were checked against stopforumspam. As I mentioned somewhere else in this forum, the problem is that PunBB checks for username+email+IP for bans so all they need to do is change one of those variables and they are in.

Fancy Stop Spam did the job for us. We are currently getting a couple of spam registrations a week. That is down from about 50/day.

Re: Where does all that spam come from?

^^ I would check if either email address or IPnr was listed, not necessarily both.

Re: Where does all that spam come from?

Part of the problem is that the site has a public PageRank of 7 and doesn’t implement rel=“nofollow” (as mentioned before) which is going to make the forum look very attractive for link dropping spammers.

There’s not much you can do about it if they’re getting through the forum-sign up. From experience you can just end up spending all your time mopping up…
