I know I would flatten things out here. I dislike using categories at this point because I haven’t found a way to make category selection compulsory for clients who are editing the site. Then it’s just one more thing to remember. But nobody seems to complain about URL structure as long as the actual (superficial) website navigation has the right amount of depth.

I’m rather in a rush and I may have read it too quickly so pardon in advance if this is OT.
Anyway reading your fear for “compulsory category selection” I recall I made an ‘instant admin plugin’ once (which is buried in the forum, here) which restricts category selection to the active section in the write tab.
I don’t know if it can be someway useful in this case neither if it still works though.

Re: Fake Subsections

Thank you all for your advice.

One thing that will make this easier is the fact that as well as designing the website I’ll also be responsible for updating it. I have no problem with flattening the structure. My main concerns are with giving the perceived depth and how our search engine rankings may be affected. Currently we come out on top for a number of searches related to schools in our area (some of them going to specific pages within our site) and I wouldn’t want that to change for the worse. I realise some of the perceived depth can be handled in the design/layout of the site. I’m hoping when my boss passes me the graphics/branding there will be enough flexibility for this.

Regarding the site as a whole I’m hoping to make it as simple as possible to update and add content. I don’t want to have to remember to keep tagging articles with different categories, ticking boxes or filling in various custom fields unless necessary and the less hoops I have to jump through every time I post new content the better.
