[wiki] Time zone madness

I have never liked this list of all different cities to choose the time zone for your site….wouldn’t it be easier to just use the common names for these time zones rather then having a huge long list? Anyway here are the choices I would use for the United states time zones please add your common time zone names and the textpattern equivalent below.

Hawaii Standard Time———————————?
Alaska Standard Time——————————- Anchorage
Pacific Standard Time——————————- Los Angeles
Mountain Standard Time————————— Denver
Central Standard Time—————————— Chicago
Easter Standard Time——————————- New York

Me neither, it’s clumsy. But I believe it’s just the ‘accepted’ way to do things (I might be wrong). EDIT: I always scroll to the bottom to find United Kingdom, realise it’s not there, go back to look for Great Britain or England, can’t find them either, then remember that I need to specify closest city, go hunting for London, find Lagos and then have to scroll 3/4 of the way through the list to find London… under Europe. Eeegads! If only I consistently remembered that I could just start typing L-O-N-D and it’d find it for me…

wouldn’t it be easier to just use the common names for these time zones

Probably, but don’t we then get weird anomalies like Indianapolis which is pretty much just down the road from Chicago but uses its own time zone and observes DST when they feel like it? :-p

When-we-feel-like-it-Time——————————- Indiana

The “huge long list” is used to tell PHP which timezone it should use, and those are the timezones PHP supports. Alternatively we could use UTC, as TXP did prior to the new TZ code.

Unfortunately I have to say, that I’m personally against the list what you are suggesting. Either it should use UTC or what it uses now (I like the current most). We all don’t live in country X where Y stands for X’s Y. There are other countries in the world too.

I think it’d be cool to have a 3-step approach: 1 = continents dropdown, 2 = the rest of the stuff 3 = “or check here if you live in the UK” and reward Stef for all of his time and energy ;-)

Re: [wiki] Time zone madness

@bloke – that is exactly what I do scroll and search

@Gocom – Yeah I am a dumb american you are right it is not a standard name scheme and should be avoided but at least we can document it here in case it helps others – So in Finland what do you use?

@maruchan – Stef’s the man!

Maybe this will help all us from searching to much…it is sorted by current time so just pick the one you want in accordance with your time now:

Don’t know what others use, but Finland is located on UTC+2, so UTC+2, or Europe/Helsinki like in the TXP’s timezone list. Translates to something like EET (Eastern European Time) if you like naming things :)
