404 on fresh install - help please - newbie

Help please! Txp doesn’t seem to work right.

I installed Textpattern 4.4.0 and it opened in the Admin backend, and I made a new article. Then I clicked View Site and it came up fine showing the Home page. But as soon as I click on the links on the Home page, either Articles or About, I get a 404 error.

Is that meant to happen, or is there a problem? I’ve tried it on two different servers now.

I’m completely baffled and would really appreciate help.

(And BTW I’m sorry if I’ve posted this to the wrong bit of the forum! Or if I’ve missed a post that would tell me what’s wrong. I did do a search.)

Seems to be working fine now. Else and Dragondz, thank you for your prompt and useful help. (I thought I had already replied to say thank you but it doesn’t seem to have been posted.)

I am trying to help a friend setup TP for his site, but even though the home page displays fine, all links give back a 404. and I am sure I have the right pages. I don’t see any .htaccess file in the root of the installation. We are using GoDaddy. We will continue to search the web for answers but Thanks.

Try turning off Clean URLS, as suggested here

Worked for me

Hi Cyril

If you use a mac files starting with a dot become invisible. Your ftp client can see them if you set it up in its preferences to do so.

Hello Cyril,

If you can locate the .htaccess file this topic deals with GoDaddy hosting and what needs to be in the file. If you can’t locate it, make one.

Good luck
