Admin side articles list improvement...

As using Textpattern as a CMS (with a blog part in it), current list of article’s organisation into the admin side can be a pain to retrieve each of them because articles list sorting is IDs dependent not context (or section) one.

For the next future level in TXP version 5, we can imagine some admin categories (sections dependent) in order to sort (and to organise) articles by some kind of section folders (admin categories).

i.e.

Content list admin page:

Section 1 title (accordion effect to show/hide sub content)
|_ Article 1 tille
|_ Article 2 title
|_ Article 16 title
|_ ...and so on
Section 2 title (accordion effect to show/hide sub content)
|_ Article 4 title
|_ Article 15 title
|_ Article 26 title
|_ ...and so on
Section 3 title (accordion effect to show/hide sub content)
|_ Article 17 title
|_ Article 3 title
|_ ...and so on

Which could be very easier to retrieve articles. What do you thing about that?

Best regards,

Re: Admin side articles list improvement...

Patrick,

I’ve given a lot of thought to this. I think an overhaul to the articles tab would not only make finding/sorting articles much easier – but it could also have some positive effects on the write tab. I’ll try to explain without any visuals.

Image the default view of the articles tab being something like what you mentioned above. (Drag/drop sortable list grouped by section)

You could then have an “Add New” link next to each section name like so:

[-] Section Name <Add New Article>
     _ Article 1
     _ Article 2
     _ Etc

The <add new> link would then pass correction section to the write tab – thus allowing you to show only the custom fields related to that section. You would also be able to set other options on a per section basis more easily. (ie: Section A has categories – but Section B does not).

Another positive effect of reworking the articles tab would be that you could then incorporate a core way to build navigation based on the custom structure of your articles tab. Something like adi_menu – but using the write tab to specify your order and which sections/articles to include. It wouldn’t be a replacement for adi_menu – but more of a simple method for creating navigation that is built into the core.

The current method for viewing articles still has it’s place, but it could be an optional view instead of the default.

I have some mockups around here somewhere. I’ll post them later when I have more time.

P.S. I’m not entirely sure this is what you meant – your post talks about categories – but I think we are talking about the same thing. :)

Hi Tom.

Don’t worry: that’s exactly what was my subject.

Genius idea: I like it definitively :)

Cheers,

Re: Admin side articles list improvement...

Patrick,

Excellent. I’ll post some UI mockups soon. I don’t know if this idea will get any traction – but I sure hope it does.
