Admin: display article/image/file/link IDs in edit tabs

How about displaying article/image/file/link IDs in their respective edit tabs?

and even in system messages, e.g. “Article xx posted”.

Would save a visit to the article/image/file/link lists to find out an ID before going off to enter it somewhere else (e.g. in Article image fields, in article_custom tags etc).

Re: Admin: display article/image/file/link IDs in edit tabs

Spookily enough I was editing an image today that I wanted to put in the article image field and thought ‘what’s the ID of this damn thing’? It’s in the URL but having it a bit more in your face might be nice. Otherwise you have to go back to the list page and scroll down/repage to find out.

Any thoughts where it makes sense to put it so it’s not in the way and doesn’t shove other info too far out of reach? I could have a quick play and see if it works (or not).

It’s funny what what you find down the back of the sofa! I’d forgotten about this one until today again.

Exactly, more mouse clicks than should be necessary.

How about in the gap at the end of the Title field?

Or in the RHS panel above Status?

Hmmm, the ‘View’ link goes there so it might clash. btw, look at smd_article_stats for a Write tab solution :-)

With regards the other tabs, how about:

  • Images: have it read Replace Image #42 next to the upload form
  • Files: after the name in the File Info panel at the top. e.g. Name: towel.jpg 1
  • Links: not sure here. Guess the only logical place is after the title somehow, but it’ll stick out a bit

?

Re: Admin: display article/image/file/link IDs in edit tabs

Mind you, these changes are not very i18n friendly (I’m thinking rtl scripts, primarily) so perhaps there’s a better solution out there.

Is there not still room for a simple: ID #12?

Images: have it read Replace Image #42 next to the upload form

Maybe. Putting it right at the top would be a bit more “in your face”. Especially if the image is large.

Files: after the name in the File Info panel at the top. e.g. Name: towel.jpg 1
Links: not sure here. Guess the only logical place is after the title somehow, but it’ll stick out a bit

Again, maybe right at the top?

Another possibility is to put the ID next to the Save buttons

On the Write tab there’s already a section for article related information below the excerpt.
