[request] Workflows (hand holding publication)

Textpattern’s flexibility can result in a more complex experience for users that are not particularly web savvy.

For example, I tend to offer different options to present information based on what type of content is being published by making use of custom_fields to store content and ‘flags’ to determine what code Txp should spit out. An article that is a photo gallery should lay information out differently from an article that is an interview.

This means that for every type of content I need to produce instructions, which isn’t a bad thing.

Thinking about other CMSs I’ve used, it would be great if Txp offered workflows so that publication of a specific type of content could be broken down in steps. For example, for an interview article:

  1. Choose section, type of article (a custom field, effectively). category and add title – click ‘next’
  2. Choose, or even better, upload image and fill in the alt and caption fields – click ‘next’
  3. Complete excerpt and body fields – click ‘next’
  4. Add interviewee name, email address and website (custom field data) – click ‘next’
  5. Preview – click ‘next’
  6. Publish

The workflow would also automatically set other options behind the scenes (eg. Comments on, category).

I’m just sharing an idea here. I don’t have a specific requirement for this at the moment but I think that a feature like this would make Textpattern a more usable system, and perhaps even more attractive than the latest Wordpress jazziness.
