New form tab menu.

I was wondering whether it might still be prudent to have the forms tab auto-open with the “default” form. This would serve the primary purpose of having the new “Article” form listing already open when you open the tab. I’m just thinking that it would indicate to the unsuspecting that these headers open up.

Or moving that on a bit further maybe have a “+” or “-” next to them including all the tag builders. Or an up/down arrow. There’s already an image for that.

I did wonder about that when I did it that way and it irks me that everything’s closed. Trouble is, it’s a per-user pref so we can’t pre-create it. The same way everything’s closed on a default install of 4.2.0 on the Write tab. The stuff there isn’t marked up BUT it has the advantage that the text (‘Textile Help’, ‘Advanced options’, etc) indicates that something will happen when you click it. On the Forms tab, this isn’t the case.

Perhaps one way round it is to rename the form types wording slightly to make it more obvious that the words do something. Any ideas from anyone?

Well if you use Remora, the arrow appears when you open them up (and, bizarrely imo, disappears when you close them). But of course classic doesn’t have that visual hook (yet) so I didn’t want to start it off and make the Forms tab the only place that had it. The only arrows in use so far, afaicr, are the ones indicating sort order so I wouldn’t particularly want to reuse those here.

Renobird commented the same to me and he used a simple +/- which works very well. But if we do that there then I think it should be applied across the board. If somebody wants to come up with some graphics and CSS that’ll do it (or will it require jQuery as well?) then by all means submit it here or as a patch. Failing that — if we really don’t want to go with the visual indicator in classic and can’t find any other way round it — the other solution is to simply go back to how it was with the type in its own column: it’s not too late for that just yet…

Re: New form tab menu.

Ahrg. The first option would have been my preferred one but I understand the problem with the preference setting.

If we go with an image it would need to be simple and easy on the eye as it is going to be seen a lot. I’ll come up with something for “Classic” and email it over to you.

As I commented over on the blog, any existing admin theme will need to be updated to work properly with 4.3.0 so adding something like this shouldn’t be a problem. Do it all in one go.

And my themes have already been updated but I won’t upload them to Textgarden in advance of the new release so if you need anything just ask and I’ll email it over.
