Consequences of deleting a user account
If I delete a user, what will happen to the articles, images etc. owned by that user?
Might I get myself into trouble down the line?
Is it advisable to re-assign them to another user before deleting?

If you delete a user from the TXP admin interface you are forced to reassign all the assets (files, image, articles etc) owned by that user to somebody else so you don’t get any danglies.

From http://textpattern.com/weblog/337/focus-on-420 …
When removing any author, all resources that person ‘owned’ must be reassigned to another existing author. You will notice this when you try to delete one or more users from the Admin->Users tab; a select list of authors appears for you to choose the new owner.

Thanks!
That’s clever!
I thought I read something like this, but couldn’t find it anymore.

Alternatively you can just remove their privileges.
