Google Analytics Site Search Tracking

Hi all,

My client wants me to set up google analytics so it captures data on what terms people use when using the textpattern in-built site search, as in these instructions.

In the GA preferences there is a field to fill out with the query parameter. So I tried “search?q=” and “search?q” and “search,q” and even “search” but none gave any analytics tracking data when searches were done, can someone let me know what correct query parameter I have to use?

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Google Analytics Site Search Tracking

Phil, did you wait some time between your tested searches and GA tracking them?
Remember that GA doesn’t track stuff in “real time”. You have to wait some time (not sure how much, but I think it’s a full day) until your hits appear in the GA reports.

Re: Google Analytics Site Search Tracking

The “search?q=” as a query parameter definitely does not work as that was there for a few days with no result.

I’ve just checked again and one of the other combinations has actually captured data (it seems there is about an hourly update delay to GA results), so I’ll narrow it down and post back here the final working solution in a day or two.

Cheers,
Phil

Re: Google Analytics Site Search Tracking

I’m getting results for this and I’m 95% sure I used q but I can’t find the setting to confirm.

Update: Found and confirmed

Re: Google Analytics Site Search Tracking

Yep, it is just ‘q’ that is needed, thanks everyone!
