Newbie Q - Template activation/installation

I ‘m a sorry for maybe sounding redundant, but I couldn’t find any related answers. Most of the threads are older and I have the feeling sth has changed in newer versions of textpattern…

To begin with, I successfully work w/Joomla!, though, I am curious to test textpattern. ;)

The installation worked just fine. I then wanted to change the admin template and downloaded one from the textgarden site. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any installation instructions in the zipped template files. So I tried downloading another one, which as well didn’t include any how-to information, but several files and folders (css, php, jpegs, aso).

I assumed that maybe textpattern has meanwhile an automatic installer such like in Joomla!?

Luckily, I could get hold of a little script developed for automatic installation of templates, etcetera. I installed the script by copying it into the textfield of textpattern. So far all went fine.

After that textpattern prompted me to create several folders (_templates/pages/plugins/pages, //plugins/plugins).

Finally, I could install my admin template and got a success notice. Unfortunately, I now can’t find the template anywhere listed (plugins, templates, etcetera).

Therefore, here comes my question: Is there any chance textpattern has an automatic template installer that works? How do I activate (admin) templates, I have already installed?

One last question goes for integrating pictures to articles. I uploaded a picture, but I don’t understand how I can link it to a special article?

Hi and welcome. For admin-side templates, you’re in luck: smd_admin_themes is the ticket. For public-side templates it’s currently more involved but hgc_templates (or mem_templates) are probably your best bets to ease installation slightly. Public sides template installation is something we’re looking to improve.

How do I activate (admin) templates, I have already installed?

If you’re not using smd_admin_themes, visit Admin->Preferences->Advanced and there’s a dropdown there that allows you to switch themes.

I uploaded a picture, but I don’t understand how I can link it to a special article?

On the Write tab, in the left column under Advanced is a field called Article Image. You can put the ID of the image you uploaded in there (the ID of each image is shown on the Images tab). Once your article has an ID you can then use the <txp:article_image /> tag to display it.

There are plugins out there that allow you to assign the image more visually. Can’t remember the names of them offhand but textpattern.org might help you locate one (jmd_img_selector might help?). There are also loads and loads of gallery plugins available that allow you to associate multiple pictures to an article.

Hope some of that is useful.

Thx mate, your advise helped a lot!

Things are a lot clearer now.

I think I’ve already gotten a good idea, of how textpattern is organized. :)
