Subsection or categories

I apologize in advance if this has already been answered in another thread.

My site has maybe 3 major sections:

Home
Free Resources
Links
Blog

When a user clicks on a section such as Free Resources they should see the landing page for the section with the expanded view of subSections which would be various subjects (ie. reading, math, etc.).

Home
Free resources
   - subSection 1 (Subject 1)
   - subSection 2 (Subject 2)
   - subSection 3 (Subject 3)
Links
Blog

When I create an article for let’s say a math category like addition and another article for subtraction, I currently have to assign them to the section Free Resources. But I really want them assigned to a subSection of Free Resources and then from there they would get assigned a category like addition, subtraction, etc..

I wanted my URL structure to be like this:

/free-resources/subsection1/category

Just for an example

/free-resources/math/addition/

Although I think there may be a way to do this using categories, it seems like such an oversight or poor decision not to support subsections when it seems it’s been at least a semi-frequently requested feature and one that is standard almost virtually all CMS’s. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Subsection or categories

You might look into some of the plugins that have, attempted, or maybe I’m wrong, succeeded in enabling sub-sections. There are quite a lot of threads around this forum looking at this same issue. A few searches might get you moving.

it seems like such an oversight

Agreed – but there should be a work-around. Again, it might actually be very easy if an existing plugin can do it easily.

Re-writing the URLs may also come into play if that is not handled by some unknown plugin.

Re: Subsection or categories

No, there isn’t yet an implementation of true subsections and I don’t know of any plugins that can do that*. You can usually achieve a similar browsing experience using a combination of sections and categories if you don’t mind the urls not quite reflecting that, e.g.

In your example above, “free-resources” is your section, “math” is your category and “addition”, “subtraction” etc. are articles. Out of the box you get URLs as follows:

section: /free-resources/
category: /free-resources/?c=math
article: /free-resources/addition

*There is one plugin, gbp_permanent_links, that allows you to construct non-standard permlink rules so that your URL structure can mimic your browsing structure.

Re: Subsection or categories

Thanks for the reply, I’ll see if I can make it work.

I really hope the developers make this a priority because it’s really the only major feature I’ve seen lacking.

It’s on the list of things to consider. Along with a lot of other stuff, so unfortunately its priority state is not guaranteed.

I hope this post won’t sound irritating but I really can’t resist. Furthermore I’m really late with my yearly rant about subsections (last time I begged for it was in this conversation with Ruud).

I try to avoid as much as I can to ask for them endlessly because I know it is not an easy task, and I know txp developers deserve all my gratitude for their great work.
Just wanted to stress again that – especially when developing non-blog sites – it would speed up and simplify things a lot.

Ok, that’s all, sorry for the silly post but I feel better now ;)

Re: Subsection or categories

I love TXP …. Alot.

And i am so thankful for the team of dev and the community that are so bloody generous. Amazing bunch!

But this is really the achillies heel of TXP. Can we not do a ransom to get it implemented earlier I for one would contribute financially if this would help. Time is money, i have wasted so much time through the years creating work arounds for this.

Amen to all the above.

I think, therefore I AM, … … er … I think :-?
