Is Google hijacking your traffic?
It’s a month old now but this might be an interesting read for all SEO geeks.
I get that Google are providing a service and that some content needs to be pilfered and excerpted to allow us to choose whether we visit a link or not, but ripping key info from a site and diverting traffic / potential clicks / cross-promotion from those — and other related — sites is a tad underhand imo. There’s a fine line between providing a better user experience of Google’s search service — which “happens” to benefit Google’s ad revenues on the side — and providing a transparent service that allows people to seek info from its source: the search engine as a meta data mediator.
It seems like it might be beneficial for your site traffic if you can ensure your site is indexed, but not too well so Google doesn’t reroute supplemental data to their own services :-o (Or maybe there should be tags or a robots exclusion protocol that allows us to mark parts of the page as ‘private’ to our sites and therefore unindexable!)

Re: Is Google hijacking your traffic?
I am not worried about Google publishing store hours, but the idea that they are displaying reviews with AdSense on the page has me worried.
The trend of what they are displaying in the SERPS more and more is distrubing. It really is getting to the point where Google is “stealing” content for their own gain.
Perhaps someone from the governement should send Google a letter asking what is going on. Perhaps if Google knows the gov’t is looking in to it they will slow this distrubing trend.

Governments can fuck themselves. Governments are fake and gay. Public market is public, if US or EU wants to fuck my grandma, I will tbag them back. Remember when EU got the great idea that MS products can not be shipped with IE and US banned Office.
Even that I don’t personally like what Google have been doing lately, I wouldn’t let Govs to do anything to internetz. It’s all just fake and gay, “I has your moneyz”. Fuck google, it’s just a search engine.
Ppl are just so “memememememememememmemememememeememme” losers. I hope earth blows soon. Gosh.
/EOTT; sarcasm.
On serious side, I don’t really care. Google is just one company, with a website. If they want to turn Google into pornsite then they do. If they want to benefit out of it, then they do. It’s their. If some gov wants to charge them from dominating market, then they do.
Google has always “adviced” visitors to look their own content; maps, videos and other stuff. They also take huge advantage from Open Source products and name them with their own brands. But that’s all good to me.
Tho, I don’t really like how they rip content, and sometimes it seems that search results are more content pages than just links. “Read this on our pages, taken from their feed — well…, watch this Youtube video from this integrated player with out seeing their profile or description box…”
PS. saying fake and gay has nothing to do with gays. I love gays.

I didn’t mean to worry you :-) Just something to be wary of I think. As site designers we think/know it’s in our interests to publish as much content as possible so we can be indexed by the search engines. If those search engines overstep their mark and use our beautiful content for their own financial gain then it becomes a bit dubious; borderline theft.
Presumably somehere in the EULA for The Internet it states:
Any content you publish online may be used by anybody (including search engines) for their own promotional use, without permission, to further their revenues. If you don’t agree to this then don’t publish anything on the Internet.
P.S. if you copy anything from one of our sites or upload part of a movie or a piece of music that you love to the Internet without permission, we reserve the right to sue your ass because we’re the corporations here. Got it?
:-)
