Sub sections Categories? newbie quesion...

Hi everyone,

I am a little confused how to put together a products section (see below), should I use (category or subsection) plugins

I am in the process of working out how best to buld a site that has a navgation of ‘products’ Once clicked you have a sticky article explaining the what products we offer, blah, blah!.
On the left (sidebar) you will have a list of the Products (Parent) with these there sub categories and then finally the product list or thumbs. You click then click to display the full article

– Jeans
  • Crafted – (list form or thmbs of say 5 Crafted jeans)
  • Diesel – (list form or thmbs of say 5 Diesel jeans)
  • Bench – (list form or thmbs of say 5 Bench jeans)
– Shirts
  • Fenchurch – (list form or thmbs of say 5 Fenchurch jeans)
  • G-Star (same as above)

Could someone please help to explain how best I can put this together (or a good example on how to use Parent, categories and sub categrories and artcle lists), as Im a little unsure how to display these using forms, ..
Please dont flame me as I am trying to get my head round the textpattern architecture

really appreicate any help..

Re: Sub sections Categories? newbie quesion...

There are many ways to achieve this, depends on whether you want to create separate sections for each garment type (jeans, shirts etc), or whether you want a single overall ‘products’ section.

Either way you would also utilise categories. So if you had a ‘jeans’ section you would create a category for the brands and use category1 when creating articles, if you had a single ‘products’ section you would need 2 categories, one for garment type, then another for brands. When you create you articles assign the garment type to category1 and the brand to category2.

Let us know which route you want to go down and we can help more.

Re: Sub sections Categories? newbie quesion...

For the moment I would have a product section and then inside that section, categories Jeans/Shirts. etc.. Inside these categories would contain the brands see example http://www.ilovejeans.com/. Like here you just click on shop and this reveals the main categories too the left, each main category contains sub categories (the nice drop down menu that appears when you click brand on the left).

But my hierarchy is..
Section: Product – Category: Jeans —> brand —>Hudson —> list view (thumbs)/Full Article

Any tips on how to setup textpattern to use nested categories/sub categories? I have had a look at the wiki and have googled for various examples on how to setup nested categories, but there seems to be little help… any good examples (tutorials) you know of would really help… thanks..

Re: Sub sections Categories? newbie quesion...

wow, no help at all.. I haven’t been lazy, just struggling with the main building blocks.
If I want to create nested categories like the the example above which link to a list of sub categories how to I tell textpattern to list the subcategories. ANd then click through to reveal another list of the children categories?

I have created a section products, created a category jeans, and have a sub category Levis (as well as others) and have associated an article to Levis (type). If I want to display a list of the Parents (Jeans etc) click reveal Levis as an item and excerpt, and then goto to the article (type).

ok, I have had a look at category_list, how do attach a form to say click on the category list presented and then (Category) list the children. (as the example above).
Im sorry if im confusing the issue, but just a little help would be really appreciated…

I think this TXP Tip by the indomitable Els is probably what you are looking for.
