Converting a site with "static" pages to a more blog like structure...

I while back I created a site in textpattern pro-bono for a client. There were only about 6 pages and I set them up using the sticky post method described in the FAQ. I showed the client how to update the pages by editing the one sticky post for each page. Of course now they want more! I need to set it up more like a blog, where they can post new articles and they will just stack on the old articles. Eventually paginating and all that jazz.

I was thinking of creating a category for each of the 6 pages. Then having the client assign the appropriate category to their new blog post. Then each page would display blog posts with one specific category. Does this sound like a good way to accomplish this? If not, can you summarize a better way? Thanks for any help!

Is there a reason you’re going with category and not section? You can more easily assign a section to a page.

I haven’t used textpattern in a while, so I either wasn’t aware, or forgot about “sections”. Ill look them up. So I suppose you can assign a blog post to a “section”? Will I also be able to post a list of the newest blog posts from each section in the sidebar of each page? Thanks for the quick reply!

Yes. If the existing pages need to remain ‘static’, you can create a section ‘blog’ and post the dynamic articles there.

Yes again. Using <txp:article_custom section="yourblogsection" /> you can show the blog posts on any other page you want.

Re: Converting a site with "static" pages to a more blog like structure...

I posted before I took a good look at the site admin. I do already have the pages setup as different Sections. And I have the “sticky” articles set to show up on the different sections. So I guess I’m already half way there, Now I just have to rework the tags a bit so it will display all the posts and not just the sticky. Thanks for your help, I move around different CMS’s so often it gets confusing trying to remember how they all function!
