I think I’ve identified the problem, and I’ll look into it on the appropriate plugin support thread:

<txp:tru_tags_if_has_tags><tr>
<th>Categories</th>
<td>
<txp:tru_tags_from_article />
</td>
</tr></txp:tru_tags_if_has_tags>

When I comment out those lines of my form with txp:hide, the performance issues completely disappear.
