"Reset author password" and "add new author": no password e-mails sent

On creating a new author (in this case with managing editor or publisher privileges), no e-mail is sent to the new author with a password. Resetting author password also does not result in an e-mail being sent. Tried with several new authors and e-mails. Any thoughts? Many thanks…

Try setting the SMTP envelope sender address (or something similar) in the advanced preferences.

While copying together some points to check from my collection Ruud beat me :)

Have you tried other (more trustworthy) email addressses?
Do you get this warning: Warning: mail() [function.mail]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect? Click or update TXP.

The “Admin” section of my advanced preferences does not list “SMTP envelope sender address”. There are other entries missing, including “Enable XML…”, “Default admin tab”, “Admin-side theme”.
I have tried 4 different e-mail addresses (all trustworthy) and none receive any e-mail from Textpattern. It sounds like setting an address in SMTP envelope sender address would work, if only it would appear. Any recommendations?

What version of Textpattern are you running? I bet next someone will ask for your advanced diagnostics so you may want to post those as well.

We are using version 4.0.6
