File categories - no way to extend them?

I’m right in thinking there’s no way to set more than one category for a file aren’t I?

I have a site I’ve built for a client and they’ve just asked me to divide mp3 downloads into separate types (so different types of song belonging to the same artist show up in different places). I’d like to use a category for the song type, but unfortunately I am already using the file category to store which artist each mp3 belongs to, and it’s rather crucial to how the site runs.

I’ve tried messing about with the smd_tags plugin but to no avail. I could, of course, not have fully worked out how to use it despite trying to make it work for several hours.

Any help and/or suggestions welcomed!

James

Re: File categories - no way to extend them?

You could make an article for each file/mp3. You’d have a bunch more options for classifying them then. If you don’t have a bazzillion mp3s that might be a quick fix.

I use this when I do files in articles.

I usually make an article for each file because of the power article sorting over file sorting. I don’t mess with files too much though…

Re: File categories - no way to extend them?

thanks for the suggestion Josh. I tried doing that but unfortunately I’ve got things set up with a custom plugin a friend wrote meaning that wouldn’t work without redoing the whole site.

Luckily I’ve figured out an alternative solution which involves just redoing part of how files work. I’m already using upm_file and it’s thanks to that plugin that I can make the site work at all!

In my opinion bringing file attributes in line with other objects like articles would be a very prudent thing to do – it’s something holding TXP back somewhat
