[newbie] Installation problems
Hello,
I am new to Text Pattern and am having installation trouble. I have over 20 year’s I.T. experience so I am not a novice at software installation and debugging. Though php is new to me, I did successfully install Wordpress and copy a blog for a friend.
I am attempting to follow the “detailed instructions”: http://textbook.textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Detailed_Installation_Instructions .
I have copied the Text Pattern files to my server public html page: /public_html/textpattern
I then attempt to navigate to www.mysite.com/textpattern/setup/ as specified. This gives me an error:
config.php is missing or corrupt. To install Textpattern, visit textpattern/setup/
I now realize the URL should be www.mysite.com/textpattern/textpattern/setup/ (Why is there a discrepancy with the instructions?)
After a few minor issues, I seem to have successfully installed Text Pattern.
Clicking on the “main interface” link on the “that went well” page, a new window opens with this URL: http://www.mysite.com/textpattern/textpattern/index.php which is a page with not much on it.
If I edit the URL as http://www.designwallah.com/textpattern/index.php, I get the real “My Site” page.
I did not delete the setup sub-folder so I can reinstall if I need to – I’d like to fix the textpattern/textpattern problem if possible.
Thank you very much for your patience.
Francis.

Heh. Then, why did you upload it to textpattern directory. If the installation files are inside textpattern directory, of course the site will then be too. What did you assume.
Basically you can just copy the directory contents to root and update your path details in prefs and config.php file.

Re: [newbie] Installation problems
If I copy the files to my root folder, then there will be some unexplained files in the root folder and the rest of the textpattern folders-files. What are these files? They are not explained anywhere.
2009/08/28 13:10 <DIR> files
2009/11/05 13:27 <DIR> images
2009/11/05 13:27 <DIR> rpc
2009/11/05 13:27 <DIR> sites
2009/11/05 13:27 <DIR> textpattern
2008/10/04 00:03 478 .htaccess
2009/05/11 05:37 574 css.php
2009/05/11 05:37 1,195 index.php
2009/08/28 12:22 23,278 HISTORY.txt
2009/06/25 04:13 1,987 README.txt
.htaccess I can figure out and the other two are documentation files. What are css.php and index.php?

Re: [newbie] Installation problems
index.php is used to serve all client side textpattern pages. All requests are directed through index.php via .htaccess.
css.php is used to serve client side style sheets if you use textpattern to store you css in the database.
Sites is for use with the new Multi-Site capabilities.
RPC is for XML-RPC

They really don’t need explanation because you don’t need to deal with them.
All changes you do in TXP (except for uploaded files) are stored in its DB.
