When I looked at using Phorum, I discovered that all topic and post urls would change, with no conceivable, reasonable way to have old urls redirect to the new. This is the drawback for swapping to this system.
We can redirect by checking the old URI against old IDs.
But then again, who will do this and is it reasonable.

No, you don’t seem to understand. Unless they have changed how the import works, all the IDs change.

Archiving this forum and creating a new Phorum install seems like an excellent idea.

Re: New forum software
Jukka: Exactly. It means modifying the import script to make cross-references of all ids, and creating a special script to look them up when they’re requested.
By the way, the import script works by dumping the database to xml, then re-importing the xml file, as opposed to working directly with a database.

That’s the catch. That is why I originally formed a sentense that goes something like: “But then again, who will do this and is it reasonable.” :)

Re: New forum software
I’ve replaced the PunBB stock search facility with a Google CSE now. Looks worse, works better.
Disclosure: Apparently, we would earn a tiny share of ad revenue from the search result pages.

I desire:
- Search within a thread
- Nested replies
- Textile yes (promotes it’s use – healthy)

+1 but with Vanilla
That’s one way to clean out old posts. Since there might be a surge in use of a new forum we might get the knowledge base back up to snuff fairly quickly. Places like txptips prove that a lot of useful how to and answers can be put together quickly.
I like Vanilla but as Mary mentioned it would require a lot of add-ons but since it is so vanilla there might be less taking-away than with another forum.
