Admin Page Requires Repeated Login

Hello,

When working in the Textpattern admin page, I am having to re-login every time I change tabs. Any changes I make are not saved. Also, tabs with sub-tabs (for example, the Preferences tab, with Basic, Advanced and Language sub-tabs) will only visit the first (default) tab. In other words, I can not get to the Advanced or Language tabs, at all.

This behavior shows up in both IE and Firefox, but not Chrome! I can actually administer the site in Chrome. I don’t get it.

I have 4.2.0 installed, and all seemed to go well. I might add that I do not have this problems with the install on my desktop at the office.

I have trolled the forum looking for a solution to this, without finding one. Any suggestions would really be appreciated!

Thanks

cuervo

Hi cuervo,

It sounds like a cookies problem in your home computer. Set up your browser(s) to accept cookies.

Re: Admin Page Requires Repeated Login

Thanks for that…

It turned out that the problem was cookie related, but its root was in the Zone Alarm firewall ad blocking system. Zone Alarm is incapable of allowing localhost served persistent cookies while ad blocking is in effect. Exceptions can be made for any other site on the internet, but there is no mechanism (that works) to do this for localhost.

There are only two solutions:

1. Disable ad blocking while working in TextPattern
2. Turn off Zone Alarm

There is a fair amount of discussion on this subject in the Zone Alarm forums, not all related to TextPattern, but as far as I can see, Zone Alarm itself has failed to weigh in on the issue.

I double-checked my findings with a tech support person via live chat, and the above statements were confirmed by that person.

I suggested that if Zone Alarm is interested in cultivating business among web developers, it will address this issue. We’ll see…

Anyway, I am posting this in the hope that it will save someone some time.

What OS are you using that you even need ZoneAlarm or any other 3rd party desktop firewall? As long as your system doesn’t open doors to outsiders, you don’t even need a firewall. And, when we are talking about Windows, Windows’ own firewall is enough. With Vista’s and 7’s firewall can do anything that ZoneAlarm can and can not do.

Re: Admin Page Requires Repeated Login

My desktop is running XP Pro. I don’t have any experience with the firewalls in that come in Vista and 7, but they are not in the picture at the moment, and I am not willing to rely on the one that comes in XP.

I am aware that people have perfectly satisfactory setups using on-board firewalls, but (other than this locally served cookie issue) I like the greater tuning capabilities of Zone Alarm. Further, I am running the ZA suite (firewall, anti-virus, mail protection, spyware, etc, etc) and find it easier than trying to get a hodge-podge of safeguards to play nice with each other.

That said, if I get sufficiently tired of enabling/disabling ad blocking, something will change. Time will tell.
