content ransom plugin?
I know that “ransoms” are popular for plugins in Textpattern circles – the author says “I wrote a plugin that does x, I’ll release it when people have given me a total of $y.”
Has anyone written a plugin to automate this process? I’d like to be able to say “I wrote a post about x – here’s half of it, I’ll release the whole thing when people have given me a total of $y.”

I wouldn’t call ransoms popular. At least 9 out of 10 plugins are released for free without a ransom.

Well, it seems to be more of an accepted thing in txp development than I see in other circles, at least.
This one sounds like about what I need; unfortunately dropcash seems to be dead. Drat. Thanks anyway! The quest continues.

Dropcash.com is pretty much dead. I’ve been using Chipin for my plugin ransoms.
I have contemplated writing my own dropcash style plugin that uses its own ipn to do money tracking. Not sure if there’s enough interest though.

judging by the feedback here? Not really an interest. I wrote one plugin so far thats been ransomed that hasn’t piqued any interest. Not likely to do it again ;)

Hi Eric, your plugin is interesting, just maybe not quite as vital as other ransomed plugins, including some of your own (of course, it depends on the project).
While, as an end user, I do prefer non-ransomed plugins – or certainly pay once use-many – I do see the sense in it, not just for the developer but also for making a more expensive proposition affordable by spreading across many shoulders. The ransom idea becomes a little less attractive the more common it gets. I guess another reason is that txp’s user base is smaller than, say, wordpress where templates and stuff are being marketed all the time. Maybe also txp is less suited to “plugin and go” solutions (Eric, your case excepted!) and the step between setting up and using as a newbie and making a detailed template is not as steep as with wordpress.
That said, a txp-based ransom plugin does not have to be for ransoming txp-targeted stuff so for people ransoming wordpress templates from their txp-based homepage, it’s probably a godsend!

Eric, your plugin is indeed interesting, but as Jakob says, its just not required at the moment for any project, at least for me, otherwise I would have contributed by now.
Seems also to vary according to type – notice the excellent response to the Postmaster v2 ransom.
I asked several developers if they would be interested in developing a membership system for TXP, based on the mem_ and ign_ plugins, but no one was interested/had time to take on the work. Maybe its something you could look at.

And I too touted your new plugin as a solution for multi-dev working practice. As jstubbs says, it might just not be what people are looking for today. I’ve listed something on eBay and got 0 bids, then listed exactly the same thing a week later and got 40…!
