Easiest way to get article count by category?

Hi all,
I’m wondering what the easiest/lightest-weight way might be to output a list of categories that also show the number of articles in that category. Something like:

• Chocolate [10]
• Vanilla [2]
• Mint [7]

Easiest way I have found is described here. There may be other ways but this is the easiest – so far.
