Emphasis bug in Textile?

Could someone try this out for me and confirm that it’s not the wine?
==
Trying to place emphasis around a word in single-quotes seems to fail. Try this as test-matter:

Wordworth’s classic poem ‘Daffodils’ reminds me of my dear Auntie Mildred.

With the above, I see a literal output of ‘Daffodils’.

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

Indeed, just tried and single or double quotes cause trouble:

Wordworth’s classic poem ‘Daffodils’ reminds me of my dear Auntie Mildred.

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

I guess it first converts the quotes to html entries and then passes the em filter, so the html entries might be throwing it off (just a guess here though).

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

What a coincidence, you have an Auntie Mildred too! ;)

Thanks for trying. Do you think this is a common case, or am I getting worked up over obscure usage?

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

I bumped into this once, so far. A minor nuisance, but having it fixed wouldn’t hurt, simply because part of the beauty of Textile is that its markup combines so well (usually).

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

Well, I’m not a Textile/Tertpattern user yet (though I’m trying!), MT is still good for me, but all this seems nice, so I wouldn’t say that this is a frequently encountered problem, but as Hiram said it would be nice to have it fixed eventually.

It’s like having an Auntie Mildred, it’s rare but it happens sometimes ;-)

Well, you can use the quote first and at least get some “emphasis

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

I believe both Oxford and Chicago styles indicate only quote marks are required for the titles of poems/songs/chapters/etc. Titles of full works, conversely, should be italic in print, <cite> in xhtml. In neither case would you require both.

The greatest typographic rule of thumb: Change one parameter at a time.

Textile ought to be able to handle broken thumbs anyway, though.

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

You are right about titles of books, plays and performances. However, there are times when one wants to emphasize a snippet of dialogue and, conceivably, the whole portion such as, President X said:

Something crazy here.” (emphasis added)

Not completely far fetched, though I can’t find any instances of it with a quick search on anything I have written…

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

This is something I come across monthly when updating a program of events. Quotes from reviews are italicised, and _"Super"_ - Barry Critic, The Times of India doesn’t work…

but I’ll use fncll’s workaround – dead simple, why didn’t I think of it 12 months ago

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

<pre>I had similar problems with this thing too, one of the
journalist was typing some chinese names and something
like shi èn and it worked and then èn shi and that
didn’t work, so that character was throwing it out of order
and had to type emphasize-tags manually for her :/</pre>

Re: Emphasis bug in Textile?

See here. All examples above work fine with the current Textile version.
