Sitewide variable with Backend acccess

At the moment there is <txp:variable>, but is it possible to define these variables in a graphical interface in the backend? So that the end-user can update them without diving into the code?

Essentially I am looking for a dumbed down version of articles—without any sections, categories or titles, etc. Just to hold basic bits like phone numbers, email addresses etc. that are not already in an article. Or perhaps little snippets needed to allow the enduser to customise scripts. Using an article would be overkill and needlessly confuse the interface…
