Ok, if you still want to try, install this little plugin. This time it should work.
It hides the alt field and moves the article image field at the top of the left column (your first request).
Once installed you can add here any further jquery rule for the write tab and remove all previous bot_show_image hacks.

Glad it finally worked ;)
And, yes, you are right about the “generic” plugin usefulness. I actually write a slightly different one for every site I build.
Keep in mind that with some modifications you can quite easily alter all the other tabs so to enhance usability and fine-tune each specific site interface.
