rss_category_cloud versus messy category URLs

I’ve been experimenting with a tag cloud. There’s a neat example of the sort of thing I’d like to achieve at dougroberts.co.uk – in fact, I’ve checked with Doug, and he’s confirmed that he’s using a single plugin, Rob Sable’s rss_category_cloud

The plugin generates neat URLs like this /category/textpattern …Unfortunately, my site (which otherwise enjoys tidy URLs quite happily) doesn’t get of with this sort of thing at all and only likes this sort of thing: section/?c=textpattern

And then I remembered a comment from Els (Actually in response to a similar question of mine regarding categories)

That’s only when the front page is used to display category lists. When a section page is used you get /name-of-section/?c=name-of-cat.

My question is this:

Do I need to use page ‘default’ (or section ‘default’) to get tidy category URLs to work?
Or is there something atypical (wrong!) about my Textpattern installation?
Or should I just bite the bullet and use gbp_permanent_links?

Thank you.

Yes.

No.

That is exactly what I was going to suggest :) Or you can give tru_tags a try instead of rss_category_cloud, though you’d need to change from using categories to keywords (as tags). It gives you a nice tag cloud and clean URLs like /tag/yourtag.

Re: rss_category_cloud versus messy category URLs

Thank you for this Els – Sorry to be a bit dim – was that a ‘yes’ to use page ‘default’? And if so, can I use page default in a different section?

tru_tags sounds good How does the author of an article add keywords, though? *

* I’ve just read the full instructions

Oh sorry, I didn’t notice you were asking page or section… It was a ‘yes’ to section default. So unfortunately it’s a ‘no’ to your second question.

Re: rss_category_cloud versus messy category URLs

Thanks anyway! Tag-cloud no more! Long live Tru-tags… (Which does exactly what I was after)
