Resolving access TXP login page & How to install new TXP over old
Hello, returning textpattern / textdrive after a several years of being away. For shame, I know, but as a VC200 member it’s time to come home to roost.
I have successfully logged in to both my https://webmin.barclay.textdrive.com/ and my https://mysql.server.textdrive.com/
My domain host is pointing to dns1.barclay.textdrive.com, dns2.barclay.textdrive.com (and dns3 and dns4) however, http://onionboy.ca/textpattern/index.php receives a “page load error” or “broken link” notice so I am unable to log in.
If I recall correctly I need to install a fresh TXP version over the version I currently have installed such that when I visit the admin side afterwards all the required updating stuff will be done automatically. Is this the correct solution? And, if it is I confess I no longer recall how to make that install happen.
Finally, I now have the most recent release 4.0.8 downloaded to my computer.
My thanks (with chagrin),
Owen

Re: Resolving access TXP login page & How to install new TXP over old
http://onionboy.ca doesn’t seem to be accessible either, did you move it to Textdrive from somewhere else? In that case, you’ll have to change the database name, user and password, and the path to Texpattern in config.php first.
Here is how I do upgrades:
- backup the database (just to be safe)
- rename the /textpattern/ folder on your computer to /textpattern-new/
- ftp /textpattern-new/ and /rpc/ to the server (don’t upload /files/ and /images/, or what you’ve already got in there will be lost)
- copy config.php from the existing /textpattern/ folder to /textpattern-new/
- ftp the new index.php and .htaccess to the server
- (on the server) rename /textpattern/ to /textpattern-old/
- (on the server) rename /textpattern-new/ to /textpattern/
- go to yoursite.com/textpattern/index.php
You will land on the language preferences page, and if necessary be asked to update your language(s). Then visit admin > diagnostics to check for issues. It will at least tell you to delete the /setup/ folder (inside the /textpattern/ folder). If everything went well you can delete the /textpattern-old/ folder.
There is a more elaborate – and slightly different – tutorial in TextBook.

Re: Resolving access TXP login page & How to install new TXP over old
Hello Els,
thanks for the reply. Correct, nothing associated with the onionboy.ca domain is working thought the DNS is pointing somewhere corrtect because my old favicon is being read and displayed.
However I have not moved onionboy.ca from elsewhere. It began on Textdrive with Textpattern. Originally the DNS was dns#.textdrive.com then the server was changed and I was placed on barclay. Once I can get into the config.php I can change that to reflect dsn#.barclay.textdrive.com
For a time I had my domain name provider point the url to a Typepad.com account but again, that’s been changed back now to dns#.barclay.textdrive.com My webmin and my msql barclay.textpattern and I have been able to access those successfully – though I have not mucked about there with anything.
I understand your directions for making the upgrade, very clear, thank you. I realize now that I have another problem:
Els, I don’t know if there is any hope for this but I cannot recall the Host url for the ftp. Yes, I do feel pretty stupid here…
I have tried onionboy.ca/textpattern/index.php and just onionboy.ca as the Host. I’m trying to find my original documentation on old back up discs. Or, is it something so obvious I am missing it?

Re: Resolving access TXP login page & How to install new TXP over old
Hi Owen,
I’ve been on barclay for some time, but it is possible that there was some transitional stuff going on with name servers or a different setup for VC200. The name servers I use are dns1.textdrive.com, not dns1.barclay.textdrive.com – just a perhaps.
Also, if memory serves, the early gamma release versions used placeholder files for sections. If those are still present it can be pretty disruptive.

Just a note about Barclay – Joyent moved to new Open Solaris servers and you should migrate to whichever server they gave you. The BSD boxes are being retired.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have good news. I am now logged in to my sftp://barclay.textdrive.com and everything is there from several years ago. Two things:
1. I will now go ahead with following Els’s instructions and will report back.
2. Jonathan, this is the first I have heard about the Joynet move. I’m having a little trouble seeing where to contact them from the Joynet site and am uncertain if I should leave a Ticket for such as this. Ideas?
P.S. Rick, as in Frantic Antic? Must be! actually it was being on your site recently that made me think, “You know, I should just return to my old VC200 TXD/TXP account.

Owen, you should submit a ticket to request your new server details. Most likely you got an email in the past about this from them.
Migrating is required and well worth it – the new servers are much better. Here is a link on the migration process.
And another link on the changes from TextDrive hosting.

Jonathan/anyone do you know what’s going to happen to the ‘lifetime’ hosting accounts?

I have a Mixed Grill account (VC2) and they should remain for the lifetime of the company Joyent.

Jonathan, thanks. I do that and I will look in on the links you provided.

SUCCESS. Beautiful. I am “in.” I can’t tell you how wonderful it is so see that Textpattern interface again with the yellow/orange band across the top. This time around I placed TXP within a separate directory labeled simply “blog” so that I can eventually create a minimal splash page for the index page. Now, I’m off to find a textplate to suit my needs. And I will certainly follow up on the migration issue Jonathan mentioned. Again, my thanks to all above. Good to be back.
