Re: How do I checkout from SVN on a mac

What OS are you running ? 10.5 comes with svn preinstalled. On 10.4, you need to install it (Fink, Macports or the binary installer from the subversion site).

Then this faq should be helpful.

Re: How do I checkout from SVN on a mac

I found that there was always something more that I wanted to do than the open source client apps would do for me, so I picked up a copy of SmartSVN – not free however. It saves me from a certain ineptitude with the command line approach.

Re: How do I checkout from SVN on a mac

Not a direct answer to your question, but to add to what Rick said, I too use a GUI client that makes the whole thing very simple. Originally I used Zigversion (free), later switched to Versions (paid). There are a number of clients available for the mac:

  • SmartSVN – the foundation version is free (linked page shows the feature comparison). Pro version costs 79/99$. Java based.
  • SvnX – popular and free
  • Zigversion – also free
  • SyncroSVN – 99$ (59$ until end of march).
  • Versions – I use this and hook it up with filemerge (in the developer tools on the MAC OS Install DVD) for diffs. 39€.
  • Cornerstone – some prefer this over Versions. $69.

Here’s a Comparison Review of Cornerstone and Versions that also mentions some other SVN clients. Interestingly the first time around the reviewer found Versions better. You can also check the user reviews on the various svn clients on Macupdate (take with a pinch of salt).

Re: How do I checkout from SVN on a mac

Thanks for all the replies. I am on OSX Leopard. I originally installed SCPlugin but since I don’t use SVN I don’t know much about it, not helped probably by the fact that most times I tried to update a folder with SCPlugin it did not work.

All I want to do now is use SVN for working with the latest version of TXP. I’ll check out one of the free SVN tools and see how it goes.

The address is on that page under “SVN Checkout”: http://textpattern.googlecode.com/svn/development/4.0.

I got errors with that, but this works in SvnX: http://textpattern.googlecode.com/svn/development/4.0
