How do I prevent two installs on one domain from interfering?

I have two seperate txp installs: one in the root of the domain, the other in a subdir. ( with a subdomain pointing to it : blog.domain.com – > domain.com/blog )

Can I prevent the install in the root domain (i mean www.domain.com) from interfering with the one located in the subdir?

Thanks,

Jan

I guess it depends how you define “interfering”. As long as you do not have a section or a category called ‘blog’ in your root install, the two should work just fine.

well, it does for the blog directory, but when getting to something like /blog/category/categoryname the root install seems to take over again. (Edit.: I get a 404 when clicking on a category link or even article permlinks)

/blog/category/categoryname is a url which you should not have as it would create a conflict.

the urls should be more like

  • domain.com/anythingExceptBlog/… – this means no category or section named “blog”
  • blog.domain.com/anything/…

can you post the site’s url?

Re: How do I prevent two installs on one domain from interfering?

I’m explaining myself badly, sorry : I get to /blog/category/categoryname by clicking a link rendered by <txp:category_list>; I didn’t name anything like that. It looks like that only the existing directory blog doesn’t get rendered by the txp install sitting in the parent directory (as it is an actual directory on the server) but all other things a bit more virtual get rendered by a 404 page coming from that parent install.

As it is a personal blog to communicate with family and friends I prefer not to post the URL on the forum, though I’m willing to send it to you via mail. Because I’m still a “new member” (registered since July) I can’t pm you on this forum myself.

I was thinking that it must be possible to use .htaccess somehow to prevent the top install from interfering? I’m reasonably sure that’s what’s causing it, but, by all means, prove me wrong :-)

Jan, are you using Firefox 3 by any chance? I’ve had a few problems since I upgraded to v3 where my cache needs to be cleared frequently if i’m working on multiple txp sites.

Re: How do I prevent two installs on one domain from interfering?

I am – but I’ve also tried Chrome quickly and cleared the cache. Thanks though. I’m realizing that I have other txp installs in subdirs working fine, so I think I may have to throw my reasonable confidence that it’s mod_rewrite out of the window.

Re: How do I prevent two installs on one domain from interfering?

pre-flight check says .htaccess is missing. Ehm..perhaps that could solve my problem

Re: How do I prevent two installs on one domain from interfering?

Yep, Solved. For some reason, (that reason is probably me) I had a htaccess.txt instead of .htaccess sitting in the root. Thank you, Yannis & Elliot.

*edit. and sorry about that :-) *
