How can I combat spam!?
I’ve been running a site of mine for several years now using TXP. The site is for an events company who put on club nights around the world.
For the past 2 months or so, i’ve been hit by an awful lot of spam! I think i’ve had around 4000 spam comments since about November time and around 1200 since Xmas.
I’ve got several plugins installed to help combat the problem, but they dont appear to be curbing it :( I’m currently using TXP 4.0.4 running the following plugins: -
mem_askimet (although Im not sure it’s set up properly?) & mrw_spamkeywords_urlcount and I dont think the spamkeywords is working correctly either as the spam comments generally have 5 links (although they’re not html-linked) and spamkeywords_urlcount is meant to bin anything with 3 or more links!
Can anyone help me with this? Any tips or ideas? i’ve already set the commenting to close after 6 weeks. Being an event website, the comments are useful for customers to find out information about a specific night so or talk about the event after it’s happened so I would like to keep the comments open…

Re: How can I combat spam!?
I’ve been using the defensio plugin and it has worked well. I also used the defensio service on another cms and had good results from that too. It’s not going to stop the bots making the comments but at least they will be automatically marked as spam and will not be published.

You might try rah_comment_spam that provides an interface where you can set antispan rules: spam words, defense method, limit words and chars, URL limit, hidden spam trap etc.
