Beginner's question: caption under a photo in an article

My Web host installed TextPattern three weeks ago and I now have a blog site that looks more or less o.k. <www.joanna.fr.>

I did it by blind brute force, removing and slightly tinkering with the page code provided until it worked.

I’d now like to put decent looking captions under the photos in my articles. I’ve tried to look everywhere for how to do it, but unsuccessfully.

Could someone please tell me where can I find this type of information?

Thanks,

Basil

yab_image plugin may be helpful for what you are trying to achieve.

Re: Beginner's question: caption under a photo in an article

Thank you very much for the lead to yab_image, my first plug-in!

In Tommy Schmucker’s write-up, he explains how to insert an alternative caption (which I’ve done and which works fine), but he also seems to imply that there is another way which seems to be the default case.

I thought that maybe the default case was to upload the image with the caption already attached in the jpeg file, but it didn’t work.

I’ve sent a message to Tommy Schmuckers asking him for advice. Please let me know if this is not accepted practice.

I also asked him if it was possible to caption two photos side by side.

There may well be an image-management plugin that would do that for you (I don’t know, but there are a lot of image-management plugins). The default way is to assign a caption to the image itself, in the Content->Images tab. You can do this when you first upload the image, or you can add it later. (In the Images tab, click Edit for the image you want to caption, then add the caption in the “Caption” text input box.)

Oddly, there is no native TXP tag for independently displaying the image caption. But of course the plugin you’re using does this, as do many other image plugins.

Captioning two photos side by side, do you mean with a single caption that spans both of them? I expect that would require modifying the plugin or writing a new one.

Thank you very much for your explanation.

For the case of multiple pictures grouped together, each with its own caption, I’m doing it before uploading with MS Image Composer (which works just fine).

With your explanation, I now have a palette of tools which I can choose from according to the particular situation.

Re: Beginner's question: caption under a photo in an article

Basil, the default caption is at the bottom of the image pane when you upload or edit an image and yab_image will use it if you have specified it and ignore it if it is empty. You enter the caption in the text box after uploading an image. yab_image’s alt_caption="my alternative caption" attribute is for when you want to override the caption with an alternative caption.

The advantage of yab_image is that it displays the image and caption so that you don’t need to use an extra tag to display the caption.

Oddly, there is no native TXP tag for independently displaying the image caption. But of course the plugin you’re using does this, as do many other image plugins.

upm_image provides tags for displaying almost every aspect of an article, including a <txp:upm_img_caption /> tag.

Re: Beginner's question: caption under a photo in an article

Thank you for the explanation.

The answer was right in front of my eyes each time I uploaded a photo, but it didn’t occur to me to look.

I am extremely pleased with TextPattern after my first three weeks. Things that seemed extremely complex at the beginning are falling nicely into place. When I started, XHTML and CSS were abrreviations I had seen, but which I though I’d never want to explore. (I’m 71.)

Wion’s two articles helped a lot.

I created my blog by blind brute force, excising portions of the pages and styles provided until it was somewhat o.k.

I’m now planning to try to re-write the templates from scratch, to see how little code I really need. You’ll probably be hearing from me again.
