Re: welovetxp.com

Thanks for your thoughts everyone, keep the comments coming. Site is definitely a Work in Progress.

Agreed, I will be putting these back.

I think horizontal scrolling is personal preference. Your right in that it isn’t common but I disagree that people will find it hard to use, the audience for We Love Textpattern are likely tech-savy designers and developers who have probably come across horizontal scrolling at least a few times previously. While it is unconventional I’d like to think We Love TXP is a bit of a playground as well as a showcase of other sites. A visual cue may well aid people.

Some of the content on the far right is “outside the fold.” Not just more sites, but the top links “ Submit a Site, Contact Us, RSS Feed” and the Ad on bottom.

Fold? There is no fold. Vertical or horizontal it’s irrelevant. You might not be able to see them, but 77% of the visitors can. ;)

Joking aside I realise that the top navigation links do not scroll and this may be an issue for skinny browser windows. The bottom items do, once you get going these all get displayed on the page. I don’t think this is a massive issue, other than perhaps the top nav links which I do plan on fixing/moving.

Appreciate everyones thoughts, positive and negative. I know that not everyone is going to like, especially those in older browsers (get with the program!). :P

Thanks again.

I promise I don’t use IE6 at home. I checked the site out a bit on my phone which, oddly enough, has a better browser than my developer workstation at work and I like it. Not sure if I like it better than the old version but I understand what you mean by it being a playground.

Keep up the good work.

They go off the whole window. Maybe those could be positioned with “fixed”, so menu hollows, but not positioning masthead with absolute. That way it stays there but with in body, and not the width of the head.

One other thing might be to define min-height for the background element or body, or adding some padding tricks to the content container that the overlapping content/more links don’t look so odd when the love is behind’em. Screenie (click to get bigger – bigger is always better ;D):

Hopefully I will get a chance to tidy it up a bit on older browsers at some point but it certainly isn’t high on the priority list. Thanks for the heads up though! :)

Jukka, your browser window is quite small, so much so that infact 97% of visitors to welovetxp.com have a browser window wider than yours thus why you are seeing things cut off. This version is using quite a wide design probably one of the widest I have done but it is catered for the audience. I do plan to try and make it slightly less obvious for small window users. Hold tight! :)

There is a min-height on the body actually. The background is supposed to be behind the content like that, I will make the more content link transparent though which should alleviate the problem. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Cheers.

Re: welovetxp.com

It’s a very good design but I prefer the old version.

I hadn’t noticed the horizontal scrolling on the first page and are not a big fan either I suspect most people will miss it and not particularly like it.

I like how the new logo looks but I don’t think it’s appropriate for what the site is about: a web publishing technology. I don’t quite get what ‘welovetextpatternyellow’ means.

The background image is quite visible and gets noticed first thing. Will it confuse newcomers? The site is about a CMS

Sorry to be so negative about it. The site is well designed, as I said, but I think it’s a step back from the previous design that was excellent.

Re: welovetxp.com

Hi Sam,

Nice re-design, but not so sure about the front page. Like lozmatic, I don’t get the “love textpattern yellow” either. Its like saying you love #ffcc33 instead of TXP itself ;-)

From a usability point of view, its hard to figure out which is the latest addition to welovetxp. The Dept. is clearly the latest addition, but is the next one Design Chapter 7 or Kaleb Heitzman? Not a big deal, but not obvious.

Also not keen on the horizontal scrolling, mainly because I’d like to see the content under the site images constantly (latest news, categories, search etc).

Heh, there isn’t anything to “get”, it’s just a cheeky rollover pointing out the overuse of yellow that Textpattern uses.

That’s a bit of a mute point. I did consider which way it should go but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter. I went with a top row and bottom row simply as it was easier to handle, I do think top bottom top bottom would probably be the most appropriate way to do it though.

I’d like to see the content under the site images constantly (latest news, categories, search etc).

This was the initial intention, to only have the sites scrolling horizontally. Alas the amount of users that didn’t have a significant enough window height caused me to have to allow for some vertical scrolling. Essentially I’ve tried to include as much as I can for those using really small browser windows without making it too troublesome. I know horizontal scrolling isn’t everyones cup of tea and like you would much prefer those items to be stationary! :)

Re: welovetxp.com

My apologies, but I agree with an earlier remark. The new look is good, even very good.

But the old site was excellent. Friendlier, clearer, easier to navigate.

The new site appears to have been designed with the benefits of a huge display – but perhaps not a display typical of most readers. My MacBook with 1280 × 800 rez struggles with the width. Scrolling up and down one expects, but lots of side to side scrolling is less appealing.

That all said… your site and work is invaluable for the Textpattern community. Thank you very much for your work.

Re: welovetxp.com

I think it looks top notch but I think the last design looked even better. I’m not sure about the text over the background pattern. By using the unconventional horizontal nav style some people may miss it although I spotted it strait away.
