Category vs. Category1
I’m new with TXP and am in the process of developing a small site. Most everything about TXP makes sense so far, but I’m scratching my head about the two different kinds of categories. I’ve searched the forum and the Web and can’t seem to find a specific answer.
What is the difference between category and category1 or category2? Does that limit me to just two categories for my content? If I’m not limited to two categories, what role does category1 or category2 play in the site?

category1 and category2 are assigned specifically to articles when they are posted and are associated with the articles themselves, category, on the other hand, is set as a page variable. To demonstrate, if you initiate a search of articles to be returned by the article tag you set the value that is category or ?c=yourcat by GET. The article tag then returns all articles in the database whose category1 or category2 values are set and match the value of “category”.

What’s the purpose of having just two main categories? I don’t see this as being anything but a limitation for the user or author: is this for the benefit of the software itself? And can I just ignore cat1 and cat2 and concentrate on the category tag, or do I have to establish them when I set up the site?
Thanks for your patience. A couple of TXP concepts are a little different than the norm.

The idea of category1 and category2 is to allow you to assign your content to two different categories. There is a plugin that supports unlimited categories, but I think it is no longer supported by the author.
There are many ways to get around this limitation, just depends on what you need to achieve with your new site.

Got it. I basically just want to have unlimited categories in my site. Two categories only seems crazy limited.

You can also use tags – there is a very good plugin called tru_tags. The unlimited category plugin is called rss_unlimited_catgeories I think – never used it.
