a) Most web developers use Textpattern as a CMS, comments are for blogs.
b) Breaking it out to a plugin with appropriate hooks opens up commenting to outside developers.

On all my sites, I don’t use comments, for the simple fact that it’s a bit of a pain. I had to enable comment moderation early on, so I have to review said comment, approve it. Then go to the front page, reply to said comment, go back to the admin and approve my own comment. It got old real quick.

I’d rather have the option to use another commenting subsystem, whether it’s hosting by me or one of the many commenting services popping up. Like I said, we discussed this a while back, can’t find the thread.

OK. What’s wrong with hiding any reference to comments (under “Contents”, at least) if the “Accept comments” thing is turned off? File size when you download the zip/tarball? :P

Nothing wrong with hiding the tab when you set comments to off.

From looking at the commenting subsystem, I just feel it was tacked on without the zen qualities of core Textpattern. Just look at how many comment related tags there are: Comment Tags, there’s 28 of them, when there’s only 139 total txp:tags. 20 percent of the tags just for comments, so I say lighten the load.

Oh, let’s not even get into the default forms needed for comments.

Re: Needed Feature for TXP 4.0.8

Hi Folks,

First of all, I like ideas from Wet and Ruud!

Ruud wrote :
Patrick seems to request just one level of reply (site author replies to comments, nobody else).

Absolutly Ruud!

Second. I don’t approuve hcgtv point of view. Cause TXP has a comment system. It’s a fact. Why don’t try to add some obviously and more usable features on it? If some people don’t use commenting for thier project (CMS). Ok you can avoid comments. From this point of view, hidding comments reply option within the back-end should be a very good idea!

Best regards,

Patrick.

It’s not so much about avoiding comments, as it is opening up the code base to even more options. The core team is rather busy at the moment with basic core functionality, new parser, tags, etc. Comments is a subsystem that will not get enhanced, since it works as stated.

Here are the many comment extensions available to the Joomla! community. Pretty impressive list, some with impressive feature sets, don’t you think?

Maybe I don’t get it, but using an alternative comment infrastructure (IntenseDebate, cocomment, whatever) is not restricted by having a “native” comment system in the core, is it?

I don’t know of any restrictions in the core, do you?

How many alternative comment subsystems exist for Textpattern?

Oh, Matt beat us to it, nevermind ;)

But I’m glad that we have a lot of different kind comment plugins that add features to the existing commenting system.

Including antispam, akismet, non-preview protection, pagination, magic textile, editors and more.

And e-v-e-n more is coming in future ;)

On the public display of replies in context:

I consider the “hover over” approach as used here quite user friendly.

Re: Needed Feature for TXP 4.0.8

I vote for ability to manage categories not by one, but by groups, like it’s done with articles, files and others items of textpattern. For example, it will be very useful if you wanna make complex tree with a lot of subcategories, Currently i have to change theirs parent category by one…
