Writing for Mobile / iPhone browsers
Hi I’ve been trying to work out how I could offer visitors to my website using mobile browsers a ‘better experience’ lol.
At the moment it certainly must be difficult for mobile users navigating my 980px wide 3 col site.
After some trawling through articles looking for optimum widths the iPhone seems the widest at 480px
A couple of sites seem to use widths of 381px
Has anyone written a site for mobile browswers? – Any tips or hints about widths to use and design/navigation tips would be appreciated.
Thanks Geoff

Re: Writing for Mobile / iPhone browsers
I have studied this also a little bit. I have seen posts that tells devices are using very different ways to render pages. Some may try to show them as normal browser would do, some may respect mobile stylesheets fully or partially, some may do something different. So it is not easy task. But if you have separated content from presentation, as I see you have done here http://www.property-in-the-sun.com/ it shouldn’t be impossible to browse you pages. Are you using Opera browser or Firefox web-developer add-on? Both have small screen rendering engine, which you can use to have a rough estimate about rendering on mobile devices. Looking your home page with Opera’s one doesn’t look bad at all. It is just linearized, columns thrown away. Or is it your homesite you are talking about?
I would add some invisible hooks for mobile users, like “go to navigation”, “go to content”, back to “top of the page”, etc, so it would be easier to navigate with narrow and long page.
