Re: Local electrician gains web presence

I figured.

You could cheat and make the “poifick” png 24 into a flat .jpg version having the transparent background and use that globally (I know, it’s a photo format, but it works), or go the righteous route and use AlphaImageLoader via conditional comments (for example), though I think few people actually bother with this route anymore.

Hmmm, you probably tried using the body bg color as the image background and save as png 8? So long as the bg color doesn’t change between screen and image, that should work, theoretically.

Ed. LOL …. got sidetracked talking to my wife and you’all beat me to the submit button.

Re: Local electrician gains web presence

Thanks maniqui, didn’t know about the Fireworks thing. But then not owning Fireworks would probably account for that particular gap in my knowledge!

As for the IEPNG behaviours hack, I’d forgotten about that as a potential avenue. Cheers, Els.

Destry, I kind of half-seriously thought about using a fixed bg colour jpg, but since I hadn’t decided whether #eee was going to be the final bg colour I thought I’d try and leave my options open :-) This is by far the easiest, most bandwidth-efficient and cross-browser route. It just feels, ummm, dirty from a future-remodelling POV if you know what I mean.

EDIT: but I didn’t try using the bg colour as the background mask in a transparent PNG. Hmmmm, good point.

More experimentation on my part is required in this area methinx to find the best look for everyone while perhaps making the IE6 version look sufficiently crap to subliminally suggest that the viewer should install something more worthy of being called a browser :-D

Ta for all the tips. Much appreciated.

No need for Fireworks. There are two free softwares to do the task: pngquant and pngq (pngquant worked great for me)

Nice tiny site with huge jQuery pluging (comparing size of site’s html and jQuery’s code). But site still is nice – may be you should fill it with some little info? For examples, photo of made work? I meen normal gallery, not shuffle cycling.

P.S. Idea with 404 is nice :)

Thanks. Yeah, it’s a monster isn’t it. Like you say, if he can get pictures of work he’s done I could eventually add them to a proper gallery page and justify the huge javascript library!

I am also going to talk to him about testimonials and more general info, like an FAQ, as suggested above. That content can be added as time progresses and more people get to know him.

Incidentally, one of the reasons I suggested putting pictures of himself up on the site is that anyone who sees the site can see what he looks like so when he turns up at their door they can be sure it’s him and not some fly-by-night rogue trader with a fake ID badge. It’s a small detail, but important in this age and hopefully more reassuring.

I’ll be adding more pics as and when I get a chance to go over to his house and take some.
