TXP vs Wordpress. [from a blogging and CMS perspective]

I know the conversation of TXP vs WP as a CMS has been brought up before. I don’t care to bring that up again. I do believe that TXP beats WP from a CMS angle hands down. You don’t have to do as much hacking to make WP work as a CMS.

But if I have clients who want both a basic CMS and a blogging tool, what do you believe is the best way to pitch TXP?

What do you feel are the ways that Wordpress beats Textpattern as a blogging tool? Is it because it has tons of blogging plugins?

I’d like to see where TXP is weak at relative to WP so I know how to best talk to the client when choosing a CMS.

Re: TXP vs Wordpress. [from a blogging and CMS perspective]

- WP has a good template support. You can just select the template from a list and the style of your blog is changed. TxP really doesn’t have support for templates. You need to create pages and forms one by one. This is, IMHO, because of the simpler taxonomy of a blog (a blog is a blog is a blog) vs a CMS (what is a CMS?) and because of the professional audience of TxP (you usually create an original design for a paid work)

- WP has a better support for “hyped” technologies. This is because of the larger user base (capable of producing more plugins) and again because of the professional audience of TxP (you usually don’t need stupid functionality in a professional work ;-) )

-WP is mainstream. It is common for companies to release a “WP plugin” for their technologies.

Pro Textpattern:

  • Safety
  • Performance
  • Logic
  • User roles
  • Sections (Sections was my #1 killer argument when I chose TXP for the 1st time)

No stress with PHP. You have clean, safe and performance optimized template tags.

Those arguments aren’t too bad but I guess I’m looking for one that appeals to the average customer. The arguments you make are geared towards the designer trying to choose a platform.

But if a customer comes up to you and says, “Textpattern who? I’ve never heard of them. But I hear so much about Wordpress. Why should I choose Textpattern over Wordpress???”

What would you say?

I’m all for TXP based on what you guys shared. Quite frankly, if there has to be an article that shares a gazillion ways to hack WP to fit your desired functionality, then that’s a sign right there that WP isn’t what it’s always cracked up to be :)

Re: TXP vs Wordpress. [from a blogging and CMS perspective]

I would say Textpatterns Image handling. It’s very easy to upload images, create thumbnails and add images to an article. The <txp:article_image> is also extremly good to have with options for thumbnail/full-version view. (I need to switch image-size a lot)

I found it very tricky to template Txp the first time, but that is not really a problem for your clients. The second time I made a site with txp, things went a lot easier.

You might add that TXP is very elegant and clean, plus gives a lot of CMS options that WP cannot match. I had one client who is a WP user. After spending some time explaining how TXP works, he found it much more powerful than WP. He still likes the WP write page on the backend, probably more than TXP, but I think that’s about the only thing.

Well, you are the one that has to build the site, right? If you prefer TXP for the job you can just tell them that building their site with WP is either not possible, or that it would take so much more of your time to customize it than using TXP would… cost saving would help to convince clients, won’t it? ;)

what type of “CMS options” does TXP offer that WP can’t match?
