Unlimited image/file categories
Is there a plugin – or a hack – or a fancy little dance that would allow me to assign unlimited categories to images and files?
Just like rss_unlimited_categories does for articles?

If you can wait a wee bit longer, I might have something for you…. *mysterious music swells*

Bloke,
How long is a wee bit?
I’m really impatient.

It’s been about 4 months in development — on and off — but I can finally smell the gasoline at the end of the touch paper. Being away from here the last month hasn’t helped but I hope to get back into the code tomorrow and whip a functional beta out by the weekend. All depends if I find time this week to hammer in the remaining bits of functionality. I’ve got about 3 of my own sites waiting in the wings that will benefit greatly from this plugin, so I do have a vested interest in making it work :-)
The only other thing that might scupper things is that the image portion relies on code that isn’t yet in TXP; I need to revisit the image handling patch I proposed a couple of months ago, tidy it up, consolidate the attributes and present it again for inclusion in the core very early in the 4.0.8 cycle. The plugin works without it, but to take advantage of some of the features of the client tags, the image code needs to be in the core so images behave more akin to the way files and links do.
It’s all doable, it’s all very cool and insanely useful, it’s just not quite ready for prime time.

You sure know how to get my attention. : )
When you’re ready for beta testing – I’d love to give it a go.
Can’t wait to see what this thing’ll do.

Certainly. In fact, since renobird made a topic for it I’ll bookmark this thread and post the beta here when it resembles some sort of usable shape.

Crap…it’s only been 6 days!
That’s way too soon to bug Bloke about this.
Must stop thinking about unlimited categories.
Just think about something else…
He’ll let us know when it’s ready.

Re: Unlimited image/file categories
Yeah sorry about the delay. Multitude of reasons/excuses:
- While enhancing the admin side to do some extra heavy category-linkage I broke the client side tags which had been working sweetly last month. Now I’m unpicking the client code to make it work with the new data format, which is a pain
- I was away (a last minute thing) at the weekend and didn’t devote the time the plugin deserved
- I’m involved with filming a game show pilot episode this week and it’s taking up way too much of my processing power drumming up interest for audience members and checking everything is lined up so we don’t feck it up on the day
- Insert other lame excuse here
Long story short, it’s further away than I thought but hopefully not by much. In the meantime TXP 4.0.7 becomes closer so hopefully the required patch to make this plugin work with images is closer; I hope (once I’ve tidied it up to everyone’s satisfaction) it’ll be one of the first few patches accepted post-release, thus making plugin installation simpler for those using SVN copies of TXP.
Apologies for the false hope. Now you know why I walked away from the opportunity to be a software project manager; my planning is bollocks!

Bloke,
I’ve gnawed my fingers off trying not to check on this. ; )
Any word? Not worries if not – I know you’re busy.

Hehe, really sorry my friend. I gnawed my fingers off trying to fix it a few weeks ago and threw it out the window in frustration. Figured maybe I needed a few weeks away from the code to give a fresh perspective on my approach. Sadly I went back to it the other day and it made less sense :-(
I just need to pluck up the courage to dive into the code and understand it all again. I’m confident the back-end is working as far as Betas go. Steve (net-carver) has offered some excellent insight into a way of fixing a known bug in my admin side so it works properly for our non-ASCII chums. To minimise even more feature creep (even though it’s technically a bug) I have decided to defer that part until I fix the front-end and have at least had some feedback from people using the code in the wild.
So I’m still at the stage of testing and testing and testing the front end to destruction. I keep finding silly situations where the context parser gets it wrong and throws some stupid error at me, which is just not on. So I fix that and then another test case breaks. Infuriating. But it will work one way or the other. As Smeagol might say “I wants it, my precioussss”.
