[request] SMS Text Messaging
Is there anyway to add a SMS text messaging plugin to textpattern.
A lot of Telecom companies offer a texting via e-mail service
So you can send a message to 12345678@telecomcompany.com Where 12345678 is the mobile number.
Of course you have to know the mobile number and the network your friend uses. Also the network has to offer e-mail to text service but a lot do. I think it may be called MMS.
I guess a drop down menu of service providers known to offer this service.
A numeric field for the mobile number.
And a text field for the message. Would be neeeded as a minimum.
Not sure if some sort of header is needed.
Anyone know more about this or if it’s possible?

I think it may be called MMS.
Say what? That MMS is just the old Multimedia Messaging Service and stannard system that allows sending messages that include multimedia objects, including images, audio, video, rich text etc. and not just text as in it’s bro, Short Message Service.

That depends on the company or companies. But yeah, almost all phones can by now receive and send emails, via operator services or atleast by using internet and own softwares. Myself, i read and send emails simply via email app or a browser.

Can but, why should? Emails aren’t exactly CMS thingy, but you can always send emails by using mail() function if you want. So answer is yes, but maybe should not.
You can always set up a form that sends emails to the email address you want, like to the SMS address. zem_contact_reborn in example can do it, or you can write couple line plugin that uses the mail function.

Not sure if you quite got it …. or perhaps I’m a little behind on mobile phones.
I just wanted a way for my visitors to send free SMS worldwide from a form on my site.
Spain , Gibratar and UK would be the most important for me.
Or
Possibly new articles could be messaged to mobiles?

In the US their’s google send to phone

geoff77 if all you want is a short form where you can send an SMS, you can do that yourself fairly easily. SMS is basically just an email like gocom states.
Note that such a feature would basically turn your site into an SMS spam portal.
I think what would be more useful is a sidebar widget for “sending an SMS to the author” … that would be cool.

i’m looking closer into Clickatell for this. i still don’t have much of a clue how it implements into txp, but it seems like the best way to offer sms these days is to just pay for it fair and square. free sms is getting a little weird now, like for example twitter just shut off canadian cellphone support, and google won’t support canada either cause our rates are out of hand.
