What's the easiet way to provide video/audio content in textpattern?

Hello All,

I’m a bit of a newbie first off. I’ve setup a corporate intranet on a macmini with textpattern and am up and running. Our CEO has asked if I can occasionally provide video or audio content on the site.

I don’t necessarily need it to be embedded but how could I provide video on the site via a clickable file name that would then launch the visitors default video program to view the video? Much like when they click on “example.pdf” it opens in Acrobat Reader. I’ve tried uploading even small video files into TextPattern and it seems to think about it a moment but then just returns me to the “write post” tab without actually uploading anything.

I’m open to any suggestions but really am looking for the simplest solution possible.

Thanks so much.

upm_file + <txp:file_download_link/> should do the trick.

Edit: If you’re having problems uploading, you can FTP the files to /files, then import them from Content>Files.

Thanks jm! Well I’ve got my movie.avi file recognized and assigned in content>files.

Could you help me also with the syntax of the tag?

upm_file + <txp:file_download_link/> pasted into an article….am I replacing file_download_link with the file ID#? anything else I need to edit in this tag?

Thanks!

Once you’re fileID is in a custom field (that upm_file recognizes), then add <txp:upm_article_file_list/> to your article template. I forgot you don’t actually need <txp:file_download/>.

You might want to grab upm_file_popper too.

Thanks again JM. Sorry I’m a dunce but I’ve added the tag <txp:upm_article_file_list/> to my article template, created a custom field called “video” and have installed the upm file popper plugin. However I’m not sure how to finish this up….specifically how to ensure that custom field is recognized? I know I’m taking up your time…just can’t figure it out.

Thanks for the help.

Did you select “video” as the custom field in Extensions>upm_file? To see if the custom field is recognized, view an article with a file ID in the video field.

OK I’ve got that all setup and it’s recognized…I also added the tag to the default article form.

I then created a new article…added the item # in the video field and created a test article with only the text “test” and the video field contains the right item #.

What I get is a post with a hyperlink to the file…ie. aquarium.avi but when I click on it the browser asks me if I want to save or choose to open a program to view…

Isn’t that what you wanted?

I don’t necessarily need it to be embedded but how could I provide video on the site via a clickable file name that would then launch the visitors default video program to view the video?

As far as I know this depends on the individual browser setup, so it’s out of your control. If a visitor has associated a viewer with a certain file type, it will just continue and open the media.

no. using txp:file_download tags will always result in a save as/choose program to open scenario because it sends the file as a certain mimetype (im assuming by altering content disposition)

I didn’t know that and it does make sense since it’s called txp:file_*download*. I suppose the same is true for upm_file then?!
