Installation problem

Hi all

I’m a newby here and to all things PHP and MySQL through I have about 5-6 years experience in XHTML and CSS.

After hearing Mr Hicks rave about textpattern so much I’ve bought myself the Textpattern Solutions book but have fallen before the end of the 2nd chapter.

I’ve have a look through the previously asked questions and can’t find anything pertaining to this but please accept my opologies if I’m duplicating what someone else has asked before.

I’ve installed XAMPP, created a MySQL user and changed around all the .conf files it recommends but then when I go to restart Apache, XAMPP says:

Busy…
Apache service started

Yet the start button next to Apache still says Start, the Admin button is dimmed out and it does not say “Running” on a green bg like the MySQL section does.

I understand Skype can interfere with Apache so I have quit that. Not sure whether it is still running stuff in the background.

Hopefully this will all make sense to someone here.

Cheers in advance

Re: Installation problem

It might still be skype. Go to Tools / Options and click on Advanced / Connection and then make sure that “Use port 80 and 443…” is unchecked.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve now unchecked “Use port 80 and 443…” and quit skype again but have the same problem.

Any other suggestions?

Re: Installation problem

Isn’t this quite unrelated to Textpattern? XAMPP != Textpattern ;) But anyway, XAMPP FAQs can help, FAQ: The apache does not start on my system Have you tried if it really works? Like is the apache process really running?

Welcome to Textpattern world :)

Thanks for the link. I’ve been through the list of suggestions and they are either technically beyond more or have been rectified and I still cannot get Apache to start.

As this appears to be a XAMPP issue as you quite rightly said can you tell me whether I need XAMPP to run Textpattern.

As I’ve mentioned, I’m a complete novice with regards to PHP and MySQL so I was just trying to follow the expert opinion which was to install and run XAMPP. If you think it’s not necessary I’ll skip it.

Thanks,

Re: Installation problem

No, you don’t actually need XAMPP, you need Apache, MySQL (or compatible) and PHP, but ‘cause you’re trying to install it on windows, it’s almost only option as Apache is generally for Linux.

But you can always install Textpattern to somewhere else, like to real server enviroment aka real Linux server that already has everything that you need.

Re: Installation problem

You can try downloading xampplite (from the same xampp website).
As far as I recall it works perfectly with texpattern and requires little or no configuration

OK I’ll try xampplite. Should I uninstall XAMPP first?

Secondly, I run a mac as well. Does anyone think it’d be better/easier to try this on the mac instead?

Cheers

xampplite requires no installation. You have simply to copy the xampplite folder in your hard disk (preferably in c:).
That said you don’t have to uninstall xampp (you have simply to check it is not running).
If xampplite works you can continue using it and uninstall Xampp, otherwise you can simply delete the xampplite folder and try again with xampp
