Write bug with thumbnails?

Hi,

I’m experiencing some issues with textpattern and thumbnails.

Basically, it won’t let me replace thumbnails. I find a thumbnail, I upload it to replace the existing one, I save it….

….and poof. Nothing happens, it still references the old thumbnail.

The funny thing is that it will actually put the new thumbnail in the images directory and rename it, but for some reason not use it.

This tends to happen to me a lot. It will be puttering along just fine, and then magically decides it no longer wants to play nice with image or thumbnail uploads.

Has anyone else out there had this happen? Do you know what it is or how to fix it?

Things i’ve already done:

- tried different browser
- cleared the cache
- reset browsers

note: i know someone suggested server caching, but if that were the case, it would be doing this all along, not in the middle of populating. that’s what’s werid, it just craps out for no reason.

Thanks.

Re: Write bug with thumbnails?

would that be a cache issue?

If the new thumbnail is in the right directory with the right name, then it can’t be anything but a caching issue. Try pressing CTRL+F5.

That cured it immediately – Now I get to figure out why this has changed on this machine…..

Thanks, Ruud, Thanks, Colak!

Re: Write bug with thumbnails?

If it is a cacehing issue its something to do with the actual software rather than a browser. Maybe it doesn’t play nice with Safari / FF mac but its so random, that it feels like a bug.

Generally when uploading to replace an image the screen will refresh, when it decides it doesn’t want to do it anymore, it just stays static. Also if it is cache related then it shouldn’t continue happing after an option refresh or a browser reset, but it does, and again its random as to when it decides to begin working again.

Sometimes it will only choke on one image, sometimes i have to rename the thumbnail with a different file extension for it to reference it properly. Sometimes (like this time) if i just leave it alone for a half an hour it magically begins working again.

Textpattern is one of my favourite CMS systems to use, but this has been pretty consistent through most incarnations.

Ideas?

oh and thanks!

Try downloading an “unchanged” image via FTP.

Or on ff mac right/ctrl -click on the image and choose “view image”. When you have just the thumbnail on the browser window click alt+refresh. This normally does it.

If it doesn’t, copy the url of the image, close the browser window, empty the cache, paste the url and check what appears…

Re: Write bug with thumbnails?

I’ve done that, it works sometimes. I’m used to that quirk. This is something more along the lines of the images directory will have 2 thumbnails, the old one which it is still referencing and the new one that it refuses to use. the refresh i’m referring to is when you hit ‘upload’ on the thumbnail, usually the whole page refreshes and even if it doesn’t display the right thumbnail in the CMS right away, its usually fine. In this case the page doesn’t even refresh, it just does nothing.

sorry, its kind of hard to explain in text. :( usually i just refer to it as voodoo. :)
