Write screen: moving section and category selects to the top

In my experience the most common end-user mistake is not to assign the proper section/category to new articles. Placing these options at the very top would increase their visibility.

I have been thinking about this for some time now and I think the Write screen could be improved by moving the entire block of Sort and Display, containing the category- and section selects, to the very top above the Status, perhaps even placing Section above the category selects within the block like so:

[Edit after some feedback]

Section and Category

  • Section: (drop-down)
  • Category 1: (drop-down)
  • Category 2: (drop-down)

Status: (drop-down with: Draft, Hidden, Pending, Live, Sticky)

More… (expands on click)

Publish

And here’s a mockup:

Re: Write screen: moving section and category selects to the top

I like the idea of re-ordering section & category 1 & 2 so that section is at the top. At least in my mind it seem to make more sense to have the section – which has to be set as the first thing you deal with. And I think most people probably work top to bottom.

Leaving these selects unheeded at times happens to me, too. And I really am aware of their crucial meaning! I go along with Martin and Mike.

BTW, the status selection could also be made into a menu.

I suppose you mean making the Status another drop-down menu like Sections and Category.
Excellent idea – I’m all for it!

I totally agree. The extra space would be nice – especially since I like to have “more” open by default.

I think masa’s first post pretty much nailed it. – I’m merely chiming in to say YES!

Re: Write screen: moving section and category selects to the top

OK, so we would have something like this:

Section and Category

  • Section: (drop-down)
  • Category 1: (drop-down)
  • Category 2: (drop-down)

Status: (drop-down with: Draft, Hidden, Pending, Live, Sticky)

More… (expands on click)

Save

Can’t check right now, but I think you could set the More… button to automatically expand in ied_hide_in_admin.

yep. That’s how I do it. not true

Man, ied_hide_in_admin features would sure be great in the core. The plugin is great…but can give some problems, and hasn’t been updated in forever.

This is probably obvious – if the status becomes a drop-down can “Live” be selected by default?

I should think so, just as article image will be the default selection in jm’s image picker.

Nicely tied together. ; )

I’m getting ready to test out the latest version in a few.

Re: Write screen: moving section and category selects to the top

One more vote for this solution.

Maybe I’m not sure about the default ‘live’ status when other status are hidden (fear that people are unaware – or forget – to change it when writing drafts), but I approve the idea to reduce the space for status radios, far too big now, and too prominent, too.

Re: Write screen: moving section and category selects to the top

I agree.
BUT changing the order of some elements (sections, category etc.) will probably break ied_hide_in_admin cos it is working based on the default order of elements.
BTW I’m always using ied_hide but I didn’t know it could be used to keep open the “more” options. In fact I still think it can’t.
And finally, I’m all for keeping txp install to a minimun letting the plugins expand over it.
Nonetheless, I’m convinced that three plugins should be in the core (glz_custom_field, sed_sections_field, and ied_hide_in_admin) given that all threee provide some essential features for all kind of users (well this is my totally useless opinion obviously)
