Re: Deleting categories
Noooo, such a compromise would be much more complicated. It’s one or the other.

Re: Deleting categories
OK, in that case I vote that parent categories can’t be deleted if they have any children :-)
Like I said, I don’t know how hard it is to implement any of this, I was just dishing out ideas, so I’m perfectly happy with whatever you guys think is doable/reasonable.

Re: Deleting categories
Sorry, I just noticed I had posted some confusing rubbish in my first reply:
Just wondering, would that also prevent deletion of parent categories that have no children and aren’t assigned to any articles etc.?
What I meant to ask was would that also prevent deletion of parent categories that are only used for organising and aren’t assigned to any articles etc.?

Re: Deleting categories
As I had my own troubleshooting thread for the same reason masa mentioned above, I’d also opt for undeletable parent categories.

Re: Deleting categories
I’m easy either way, but I suppose it makes sense to prevent deletion of parents if they are “used” (have children) regardless if those children have things assigned to them or not.

Re: Deleting categories
I have a working changeset prepared… it does have one downside: you cannot delete a parent and its children all at once. You first have to delete the children before the parent can be deleted. Is this an acceptable side-effect?

Re: Deleting categories
Is that the only downside?

Yes, of course :)

Re: Deleting categories
You mean during a multi-edit delete? So if I checked all of:
- fruit
- strawberries
- raspberries
- blackberries
and did with_selected -> delete, only the three subcats would go? Providing they were unused of course.
Not an insurmountable problem, I say go for it.

I agree, too, and would welcome that change.
